It's our fifth anniversary!
We are pleased to announce that the 5th annual el taller @ KJCC Summer Institute will take place at NYU Madrid from June 24th through 28th. We are looking forward to hosting an array of in-person and hybrid events related to the Iberian world and are particularly excited to welcome colleagues based in Spain and across Europe to collaborate in this year’s edition. All panels will take place at the NYU Madrid campus at Calle del Barquillo, 13, with excursions to other sites. Please save the dates and stay tuned for more information on scheduled programming coming soon.
As in past editions, we are excited to organize a Graduate Showcase to highlight research from graduate students in our field and provide tailored feedback in small sessions with faculty. Graduate students should complete this Google Form to express their interest in participating by March 15th: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfWRP_N9HuK8C8t4NUXAZfhArqv6XxM2fHzRDqr3LGjFNyFjg/viewform

Welcome back to the new academic year! We’re kicking off our programming with a round table on September 29. Join us for “Between Spain and Harlem: A Roundtable on Translation and Race” by registering at this link: https://forms.gle/pU118ynQLJugXNEu7
This roundtable explores exchanges between Harlem, Spain, and back again in the 1920s and 1930s. The work of Anne Donlon, Rocío Cobo-Piñero, and Rebecca Pawel explores the transatlantic exchanges across media and performance in the works of a wide array of authors, from Co**ha Méndez, Ernestina de Champourcín, Rosa Chacel and Lucía Sánchez Saornil to Arturo Schomburg, Dorothy Peterson, Langston Hughes, Salaria Kea, Thyra Edwards and Louise Thompson, among many others. How were flappers received in Madrid and Barcelona? How did writers, artists, musicians and filmmakers rally and organize against fascism and colonialism? What did the Harlem Suitcase Theatre borrow from Spanish drama and the Guerrillas del Teatro? How did race and gender translate across cultures? To what extent were literary relations one-way, or reciprocal? This roundtable will be moderated by Ameya Tripathi (NYU).
