This is the second week of our duet contest at MichaelJacobsVocalStudio. To keep me entertained, I sang one half of a duet and let students record the other half. Check out each video on IGTV and like your favorite of the 4. .anne.eagle .danner .clayton

As I’m curled up on my couch in mode, I am reminded that there is work that I could be doing right now. I hope that students will take the time to practice. The mechanical process of working on vocal technique can be a distraction, a meditation, and a way to stay on track with goals. I pledge to be better during this unexpected diversion. Who will join me?!

I hope you and your loved ones stay safe and healthy (physically and mentally). A big part of maintaining mental health includes pursuing the things that you value. If singing is important to you, make the time to improve your craft. That might mean practicing more or scheduling a voice lesson. As always, we offer Skype and FaceTime lessons for your convenience and comfort.

I am incredibly lucky to work with deeply talented folks, like !
Another student making me proud in a cabaret performance! is acting and singing circles around her song from a few weeks back. The belting, the mixing, the specificity...I love it!

One of the biggest challenges I face as a is trying to shift students from targeting a particular outcome (belting a high E) to focusing on the WAY they are approaching singing (proper breathing and support). Students will become frustrated when learning to use a “hammer” instead of the “wrench” they may be more accustomed to. Sometimes, both tools are equally valuable, but in different contexts. Sometimes, the “comfortable” tool involves unnecessary tension that will ultimately be bad for singing. When learning technique, it’s ok to make mistakes! It’s totally expected and normal. Be kind and patient with yourself. You and I would both like to maximize your potential, and to help you sing with the greatest sense of ease possible.
