Last Friday, CEYE students presented at the Annual Neuroscience Retreat hosted by The Friedman Brain Institute! The Neuroscience Retreat is an opportunity for faculty and students in the Neuroscience Department at Mount Sinai to connect and share their latest findings.

We are so incredibly proud of all of our students. We also want to give a huge congratulations to Nathaniel Tjen who won the CEYE Best Poster Award!

Last month, CEYE had the pleasure of hosting Riverdale Country School for an incredible 3-day visit!

On Day 3, students dove into a super fun anatomy experience—starting with Ms. Afifa’s interactive eye lesson filled with games, followed by Ms. Mia’s heart session where they learned all about keeping their hearts healthy.

They also heard from Dr. Frempong, who shared insights on eye pathology, and Dr. Bienstock, who spoke about his inspiring journey into medicine. To wrap it all up, Dr. Alzate gave a live ECHO demonstration of the heart.

It was an engaging, hands-on, and unforgettable day for everyone involved! ✨

This past month, CEYE, alongside the Friedman Brain Institute and Mentoring in Neuroscience Discovery (MiNDS), hosted our 14th Annual Brain Fair 🧠✨

We welcomed over 500 students to campus and celebrated Brain Awareness Week surrounded by an incredible community. From alumni returning to support the event, to mentors, neuroscientists, and neurologists coming together, the day was a true reflection of collaboration and shared passion for science.

With engaging, hands-on activities and so many dedicated volunteers, the fair highlighted what it means to inspire the next generation through community and curiosity.

On February 10, several of our CEYE scholars traveled upstate for Advocacy Day, where they met with legislators to share their powerful “why” for preserving the STEP/CSTEP programs. Their voices, stories, and commitment highlighted just how critical these programs are in expanding access and opportunity for students across New York.

📣 CEYE Spotlight: Sarah Williams 📣
As she was completing her PhD in Neuroscience at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Sarah has been an incredible volunteer with MiNDS and CEYE for the past SIX years. She’s helped with dissections during Day with a Scientist, taught the Introduction to the Brain course with MiNDS at PS 171, and shown up year after year for Mount Sinai’s Brain Fair. Sarah brings such genuine energy and creativity into every space. She makes science feel exciting, welcoming, and possible. You can see how much she cares, and that makes all the difference. We are so grateful for her time, her heart, and the way she continues to show up for our students! 💗

Last Friday, our Sophomore Success Scholars wrapped up their final 10th Grade Engagement Session with advice from the Lloyd Sherman Biomedical Science Enrichment Program Junior Class, plus research insights from seniors Jonathan Ravelo and Joseph Pagan.

It was a fun, exciting day centered around conversations in STEM, mentorship, and navigating academic pathways.
