Have you ever received a random message from a stranger with an NFT profile on Discord?
Most Discord scammers will try to convince you to go to a specific website and connect your wallet to claim free NFTs. If there are huge projects getting enough attention from the NFT community, they will claim they are a part of the team and lead you to a fake website or collection. These scammers will also offer fake giveaways, requiring you to deposit a certain amount of cryptocurrency before you can participate.
So, in order to avoid a conversation with a scammer, here’s what you can do to stay safe:
“We will not DM you first.” - NFT project founders and community managers will always remind their members that they don’t slide into DMs. There are Discord channels where you can adequately communicate with the team members of a collection. As a rule of thumb, you should never answer any random Discord messages whatsoever. In fact, we highly recommended you turn message requests off completely.
Protect your seed phrase! The only way you can recover your crypto is by using your seed phrase. If you lose this or if someone steals this key from you, you’ll never be able to protect or recover any of it. Don’t give your seed phrase to anyone, ever.
Avoid clicking suspicious links. If a random person on Discord messages you with links, don’t click them, no matter how tempting their offer may be. Legitimate projects have dedicated channels for their official links, so if you want to visit their collection or their website, find this channel to avoid anything dangerous.
