Well, you see… “I think they mean well” isn’t exactly a glowing endorsement. 😂

Sorry, I just can’t pretend a system that removes parents from the center of their children’s education deserves applause just because it’s “normal”.

We are allowed to question the system. We are allowed to decide that five days a week, seven hours a day, for thirteen years is way too much of a child’s childhood to hand over to strangers.

And yes, you’re allowed to cut the cord completely.

The other day I walked into the living room and found my boys playing Mass again.

One was the priest. One was ringing the bells. And my youngest wanted to sprinkle holy water on eeevveeeeryyythiiingggggg 😂😂

It made me smile because kids don’t usually pretend to be things they’ve never been inspired by.

That’s one of the reasons I’m so intentional about the toys we keep in our home. I want my children to have toys that encourage wonder, virtue, creativity, and a love for God. I want them to grow up believing that serving Christ is exciting, beautiful, and something worth giving their lives to.

No, I don’t expect every little boy who plays Mass to become a priest. But I do hope my children grow up knowing that a life lived for God is something to aspire to.

And if that starts with a wooden altar, a tiny chalice, some liturgical cloths, and a child’s imagination… I think that’s pretty incredible. 🤍

What if the toys our children play with are shaping the people they will become?

Children naturally imitate what they know, love, and admire. That’s why I’ve become so much more intentional about the toys we bring into our home. Every toy is teaching something. Every opportunity for pretend play invites them to imagine themselves as someone. I want my boys to grow up seeing that courage, sacrifice, service, and holiness are worth pretending to be.

Will every little boy who pretends to be a priest become one? Of course not. But if our children never have the opportunity to imitate holy things, how will they ever imagine themselves living it?

As parents, we have the incredible privilege of filling our homes with things that point them to God. The rhythms of the liturgical year, the lives of the saints, family prayer, the Holy Mass, everyday conversations about our faith, and even the toys they play with all become part of the atmosphere our children breathe.

Toys aren’t just there to keep our children busy. They can spark curiosity, nurture virtue, and invite our children to imitate what is good, beautiful, and true. What if those ordinary moments in the playroom become the foundation for extraordinary vocations?
