Yesterday our campers made new friends at the park and borrowed a walkie-talkie for a very important mission: a collective gemstone hunt! 💎📻

The day was full of new friendships, games, spinning objects, and walking together on a shared adventure. ✨

For the next 2 weeks, we’re offering extended days until 5:00 PM, and we still have a few spots available next week! 🌿🎨

🌻🌀 This Week at Creative Nature NYC: Spinning & the Wheel! 🌀☀️

This week, we’re exploring the fascinating world of spinning, wheels, and movement!

How do planets move around the sun? 🌎☀️
How do sunflowers grow and turn toward the light? 🌻
What makes a top spin—and how can we make it spin longer, faster, or better? 🌀

Along the way, we’ll wonder:

✨ What makes something spin?
✨ What happens when we change the shape, size, or weight of a spinner?
✨ Can we predict which top will spin the longest? Why?
✨ How are wheels and planets alike? How are they different?
✨ What do you notice when you watch something spinning closely?
✨ What ideas can we test, change, and try again?

These are just some of our explorations this week. Stay tuned for more adventures as we cruise through the universe, whirling, spinning, and orbiting around the sun! 🌎🌻🌀✨

This week’s exploration theme is Water, and nature has given us the perfect classroom with all the rain! 🌧️💙

Yesterday, we headed out on a neighborhood rain walk where we splashed through puddles, caught raindrops, discovered how water makes tissue paper release its colors, and observed the beautiful changes rain brings to trees and plants.

This is just the beginning! Stay tuned as we continue exploring the many forms and bodies of water around us through hands-on experiments, creative discoveries, and outdoor adventures. 💦🌿✨

FREE PLAY🙃!
We intentionally make lots of time for free play and dramatic play because it’s at the heart of what we do and what we believe in. 🌿✨

Through imaginative play, children build meaningful friendships, strengthen their creativity, grow in confidence, and develop critical thinking skills. Some of the most important learning happens when kids are simply free to play.

This week, we’ve been exploring the incredible power of wind—as a force of transportation and as nature’s way of dispersing seeds.

Together, we’ve wondered:
🍃 How do things fly?
🌬️ Why do storms happen?
☁️ Where does the wind come from, and where does it go?

Through observation, conversation, experimentation, and creative building, the children have been developing their own ideas about this fascinating natural phenomenon.

Take a look at their amazing creations and listen to some of the thoughtful conversations they shared along the way. Their curiosity, imagination, and scientific thinking continue to inspire us every day.

Better than a paparazzi is a little camper. 📸✨

In this case, the great Raffi documented one of the most exciting encounters of the day: a beautiful yellow caterpillar that decided to visit camp.

We love this drawing for so many reasons. It reminds us that listening takes many forms, that at camp we can all be part of a conversation in different ways, and that some incredible young artists simply need a little extra time and space to develop their en plein air observations and drawings.

Our special visitor was a Yellow Woolly Bear Caterpillar! We learned that, in just a couple of weeks, it will transform into a beautiful Virginia Tiger Moth.

Moments like these remind us that nature is our greatest teacher—and that slowing down to observe is where wonder begins. 💛🐛🦋

We are fascinated by light! ✨ The way it travels, changes, dances, and transforms the world around us has sparked so many questions and discoveries.

How are shadows created? What happens when we move our bodies closer or farther from the light? Can we make a shadow tell a story?

Children have been exploring these ideas by creating their own shadow puppets, experimenting with flashlights, and bringing their characters to life through imaginative stories and shared adventures. Together, they are discovering that light is not only something we observe—it is something we can play with, investigate, and use as a tool for creativity, connection, and storytelling.

This week we’re exploring light and shadows. ☀️

What is light? Can we catch it? How does it change the way we see the world?

Sometimes the most extraordinary discoveries begin by slowing down and noticing the things we often take for granted. The warmth of the sun on our skin. The golden glow of the afternoon. The long shadows that quietly stretch across the ground. The way a single beam of light can transform an ordinary moment into something magical.

Yesterday we danced with light, observed our own shadows, and used charcoal to trace the beautiful silhouettes and textures of leaves and tree bark.

What happens when the sun moves across the sky? Why do our shadows grow, shrink, and disappear? What else might light reveal if we take the time to look closely?

We can’t wait to keep following the children’s questions and see where their curiosity leads us.

Stay tuned for more light explorations and experiments throughout the week. 🌿☀️🖤

This is an extraordinary piece of work that reflects the impact of the Canadian wildfires on our daily life in NYC, created by our amazing camper Jacob — a true book maker and story writer. 🌿📖

Through his imagination and creativity, Jacob transformed a moment in our environment into a story to share. We can’t wait to see what adventures and creations next week will bring! ✨
