Go where the traction takes you.

An entrepreneur told me that a long time ago, and when it comes to the Kazam Humor Engine, by far the most traction I've gotten has been from my wedding toast posts.

Not really surprising.

In fact, it's one of the reasons I built this software.

I didn't want to teach somebody a class on how to write jokes for a wedding toast. I wanted to give them something they could use to find the funny quickly, easily and safely—with some guardrails to keep them out of trouble.

Because giving the toast is hard enough.

Trying to be funny is where things can go very wrong.

I still believe a whole lot more people can benefit from this technology, and I'll keep shouting that from the rooftops.

That's my mission, and I've chosen to accept it.

The Best Man doesn't have that luxury. 😂

He got thrust into this situation and a big part of his mission is to be funny.

A wedding toast without humor isn't much of a wedding toast—and that's some third-act tension no wedding needs.

I believe the Best Man can be the hero.

THE ARCH MANNING STORY AND WHY SOMETIMES... THEY LAUGH. YOU LOSE.

Trust me, I would much rather spend my time talking about all the good things that happen when people laugh.

I've spent 38 years of my life making people laugh and teaching other people how to do it.

I believe humor connects us. It breaks down walls. It reduces friction. It can make an uncomfortable moment easier, a presentation more memorable, a salesperson more relatable and a room full of strangers feel like they've known each other for years.

But not all laughs are created equal.

And when stories like the one involving Arch Manning and Holly Rowe happen—and unfortunately they happen far too often—I feel compelled to say something.

First, I'm not interested in piling on Arch Manning.

He laughed while talking about an absurd AI-generated video depicting his coach Steve Sarkisian slapping ESPN reporter Holly Rowe. He called it hilarious. People in the room laughed with him. He was criticized, apologized the next day, and Rowe accepted his apology.

And I actually believe there is an important distinction here.

I don't think we need to assume Arch Manning was sitting there thinking violence against women is funny.

I think he saw an outrageous, ridiculous AI video and reacted to the absurdity of what he was seeing.

But here's the question I've been teaching about comedy for years:

WHAT IS FUELING THE LAUGH?

That's the part that matters.

Because you can have surprise.

You can have absurdity.

You can have incongruity.

You can have an entire room laughing.

And still have chosen the wrong path to the laugh.

In this case, underneath all the AI absurdity, the thing ultimately powering the moment was an image of a man hitting a woman.

That's where the comedian's job—or anybody's job when they're trying to be funny—doesn't end with:

"Did they laugh?"

You also have to ask:

What did they laugh at?

Who paid for that laugh?

Did the humor make the moment better?

Those questions became even more important to me when I started turning what I've learned about comedy into software.

Because it would have been very easy to build an AI system whose only job was:

MAKE THIS FUNNY.

We didn't.

And whether you're selling condos or coconuts, funny matters.

It breaks the ice. Lowers the tension. Builds relationships. Makes you memorable. And makes people actually enjoy talking to you.

I know this is ridiculous. 😂

But sometimes you do something just for funny's sake.

I was creating an ad for the newly upgraded Quick Hits feature inside They Laugh. You Win. and turned myself into the cheesiest, most over-the-top cowboy car salesman imaginable.

Then I saw the image.

And I just saw the funny.

So instead of making a normal ad, I made a 30-second country music video. 😂

And somewhere along the way, Buck Smiley was born.

Okay, I'm obviously biased.

I built one of these. I won't tell you which one, but it's not ChatGPT lol

So consider this my closing argument. Then you can be the jury and know I have wanted to this side by side comparison for awhile now.

I gave ChatGPT and the Kazam Humor Engine the exact same prompt:

I'm giving a presentation to my sales team about following up with customers. One of my main points is that most salespeople give up way too quickly. They send one email, don't hear back and assume the customer isn't interested. I want to make that point funny without making fun of the customer. Can you turn it into a joke?

ChatGPT did what ChatGPT does incredibly well.

It gave me an answer.

There's funny in there. There's useful material in there. And if that's all you're looking for, great.

But look at the other side.

Kazam didn't just give me words.

It eliminated the "wasted motions" & tightened it up.
It recognized the setup.
Built the context.
Created the punchline.
Then gave me three tags to keep the laugh going.

And that's just where we started.

I can lock anything I like. Punch Up what I have. Generate another Draft. Try an entirely different Angle. See Why This Is Funny. Get Coach Notes. Turn the same idea into Quick Hits. And eventually get help with How to Tell It.

Could you ask ChatGPT to do many of those things?

Absolutely.

But here's the catch:

You have to know what to ask.

You have to know something needs a tighter setup. You have to know what a tag is. You have to know when you need a new angle instead of another draft. You have to understand joke structure well enough to direct the process.

So I did it again.

The #2 trending story was NFL Opening Day.

I gave myself 30 seconds for a take, and honestly, I didn't give the Kazam Humor Engine much:

“Today is opening day of the NFL season where everyone's team is in first place...for a day.”

That's it.

But sometimes that's enough.

Even those three little words — “…for a day” — tell the engine a lot about my point of view. The optimism is temporary. That's where the funny lives.

A couple of generations, I locked in the pieces I liked, then one Punch Up to polish and tighten it.

Less than a minute later, I had a complete joke — setup, context, punchline and three tags.

Is this going in my next comedy special?

No. 😂

But is it more than good enough to bust the balls of your buddy who's a little too optimistic about his team's chances after they went 2–15 last season?

Absolutely.

And that's another thing I want people to understand about Joke Writing for Everyone.
