LESS CONCRETE, MORE JUNGLE 🌿🐆

Last night’s talk with Yadira Ocoguaje and Sophia Rokhlin where we gathered for an evening of stories, memory, lineage, and living knowledge carried from the Amazon into the heart of New York City.

The rainforest played a critical role in the story that eventually became the Psychedelic Assembly, so evenings like this always feel a little full circle. A reminder of invisible roots that connect all of us.

We’re deeply grateful to Yadira for sharing her time, stories, and the wisdom of her Siekopai community with us, and to Sophia for bringing this gathering together and guiding such a thoughtful and beautiful conversation.

Always meet your heroes. 🌿

SO grateful to the legendary anthropologist and ethnobotanist Wade Davis for guiding our NYC community through the life, legacy, and extraordinary journeys of Richard Evans Schultes, a pivotal figure in the history of psychedelics.

An enormous thank you to Lightning Society for welcoming us into their gorgeous space and giving us a home for an evening of psychedelic history, storytelling, culture, and community. We couldn’t have imagined a more beautiful backdrop for this conversation.

Endless gratitude to our incredible team for Assembling early, staying late, moving a mountain of chairs, and working so hard behind the scenes to pull the whole thing off. We 💛 you!

And finally, thank you to every single person who came out for this (from near and far.) Whenever we meet someone who tells us they flew in all the way in from another state just to attend one of our offerings, it makes us feel like we’re maybe on the right path. 🙏

JUST ADDED: This Monday join Yadira Ocoguaje, young leader of the Siekopai Nation of the Ecuadorian Amazon, in conversation with Sophia Rokhlin, author and advocate for the protection of traditional ecological knowledge, for a conversation on yajé (widely known as ayahuasca), women’s leadership, and the courage it takes to stand for the protection of the earth today.

This evening we’ll explore the Siekopai people’s ancestral practices with yajé, the threats they face from extractive industry—including oil drilling and palm oil concessions surrounding their ancestral territory—and the erosion of seed saving, cultural memory, and connection with forest spirits and ancestral practices in Yadira’s territory. We’ll also discuss the real need for intercultural alliances and solidarity in this time of rapid transformation, danger, and opportunity.

Come curious to learn about the Siekopai’s cosmovision, culture, and brilliant ecological practices. We’ll also ask what role non-Native ayahuasca drinkers can play in protecting, honoring, and uplifting the ancestral keepers of yajé and the world’s greatest forest.

Each month we curate a Field Trip for Assembly Members, and explore a new location somewhere in the city!

For September, we went to the New York Botanical Garden, which is currently has a psychedelic 60s, Moomin, & Buddhism themed. Highly recommend checking it out before it goes away in a few weeks!

Where are we Field Tripping to next? 👀 (We don’t know yet lol. But stay tuned!)
