Summer programmes in Oxford, Cambridge and London since 2010 taught me the craft. Running programmes in Singapore, New York and Sydney added another layer: how differently people learn depending on where they're from, and how much that awareness matters in education.
All of it went into building Berndt Education and the team behind it. It's nice to look back and be grateful for the experiences that led here.
We support students, families and companies around the world, our clients are happy, and honestly, so are we. And we're just getting started. If you want to take the next step, wherever you are, we are here for you — link in bio.

The language your teams speak is a strategy decision, not an HR line item.
Most corporate language training was built to pass a test. Useful, but people can conjugate perfectly and still freeze in the meeting that decides the contract. What wins business is the confidence to make your point across an accent and a time zone, and be understood the first time.
The proof is in the numbers. Nearly one in four US companies say they've already lost business for a lack of language skills (ACTFL), and in Europe more than one in ten exporting firms have lost a contract for the same reason (European Commission).
And the next decade of growth isn't only in English. If US Latinos were a country they'd be the world's 4th-largest economy ($4.4 trillion). The Gulf is targeting trillions in new growth by 2030. China is the world's 2nd-largest economy. English is the way into India and Africa. The companies that can meet these markets in their own language, with confidence, gain an edge the rest can't buy back later.
That's the work we do: live, human training built around real meetings, so your teams can walk into the room that matters and hold it.

Applying to Oxford or Cambridge this year? The next few weeks decide more than they look like they do.
UAT-UK test booking is open now, for the ESAT, TMUA and TARA. The booking deadline is 28 September, tests are sat 12–16 October, and the UCAS deadline is 15 October. Oxbridge applicants have to sit in October, so it's the busiest month of the whole application.
Two things people miss: book early rather than on the deadline, and if you need access arrangements, that deadline is earlier still, 14 September.
And if you're aiming at next year's window instead, this is exactly when the best work starts. We usually begin with a student a year to eighteen months out, working one-to-one, so nothing is ever a last-minute scramble. Starting this winter means an easier autumn next year.

There's a person on almost every team we train. Brilliant at the job, sharp and funny in their own language, and oddly quiet the moment the meeting switches to English. The ideas don't change. The confidence does.
That quiet has a price. Poor communication costs companies roughly €9,000 to €50,000 per employee a year (about £8,000 to £43,000) in lost time and the deals that quietly slip away (Axios HQ). On an international team, a lot of that isn't a tools problem. It's good people who know the work but can't yet say it or sell it in a second language.
AI hasn't fixed that, and we don't think it will. It translates words well enough; what it can't do is give your sales lead the nerve to hold a tough client call in English, or your engineer the ease to present to a board in German. As the easy part gets cheaper, the human part of communicating, being understood and sounding like yourself in another language, only gets more valuable.
That's the whole reason Berndt Education exists. Our groups stay small and the educator stays the same week to week. People are speaking out loud from the very first lesson, rehearsing the real call or meeting they're about to walk into, so they make their mistakes with us rather than in front of a client. That's where the confidence comes from.
Summer is quietly when this gets decided. Teams that start now walk into autumn's pitches and reviews already steady. The ones that wait usually end up paying the gap a second time in Q4.
If a particular face came to mind while you were reading this, that's the conversation we're always glad to have.

Picture the student as a boat on the shore. The university they're dreaming of — Oxford, Cambridge, the Ivy League, the best of the UK and the US — is an island, out across the water. Nobody drifts to an island by luck. You reach it two ways at once: the right wind behind you, and a sail that's properly set.
The student is the boat. The sail is their own skills and abilities — their grades, their writing, the way they hold a room when it's their turn to speak. The wind is the guidance, and ours comes from people who've sat on the other side of the desk: former admissions officers and tutors who've graded the exams, run the interviews and sat on Medicine panels. They know what a college is really reading for.
A sail like that isn't rigged the morning you set out, though. It's built over time. Our subject tutors work with a student through the year before the deadline, lifting grades while there's still room to lift them — which is why starting a year or more ahead tends to make the real difference. And because we began as a language and communication institute, our language trainers get second-language speakers of English ready to ace the exams and carry an interview in a language that isn't their first.
Wind and sail together is how you cross. One of our students last year came away with an offer to read Law at Oxford, every other UK choice, and a place at Georgetown. He is now well into his Oxford Law degree and we cannot be happier for him.
I don't think much of that was luck. It was a good boat, a sail set with care, and the right wind behind it — with enough time to do it properly.
So, which island is yours?

The students asked us to take this one. That's the part we keep coming back to.
By the end of the summer in Sydney, the four of us had become the kind of team the students wanted a ridiculous photo with — Sulav, Nour, our founder Denny, and Lily. 😄
People talk about teamwork like it's a process. Mostly it's simpler: would you want a photo like this with the people you work with?
What made it work came down to two things (swipe →): saying "I don't know" early, and keeping the humour through the hard parts. Be honest about what you can't do yet, laugh through the rest, and the work gets better — and so does the team.
It's also what we build at Berndt Education.
Were you ever on a team like that? Tell us what made it work. 👇

You can't be Superman every day. Some days you're Clark Kent. Some days you're Diana, not Wonder Woman — and that's not the weak version. That's where the work happens.
We see it constantly with German learners: the freeze over der, die or das. One wrong adjective ending and the native speaker switches to English. A sharp correction at school, and someone just… stops speaking.
Somewhere along the way, German became the language where mistakes get punished. Brilliant for engineering. Paralysing for a beginner ordering a coffee.
We read it differently. A mistake isn't failure — it's information. It shows you the gap, which is exactly where to relearn. Hide your mistakes and you hide the map.
That's why we choose trainers for patience as much as expertise. A learner safe enough to get it wrong today gets fluent faster than one performing through gritted teeth.
Every mistake is one step closer to mastery.
What's the language mistake that taught you the most?
