He said, “You are not slain, you are not drenched in ecstasy" So, before his life-giving face,, I fell like a lifeless co**se.
He said, “You are erudite , drunk with fantasy and
doubt”; So I became foolish, witless, striped of all knowledge!
He said, “You have become a candle, the Qiblah {the center of attention} of this assembly.”
I said, "am no candle, no assembly", I became scattered smoke.
He said, “You are shaikh, a master, a guide, a leader,
{I said}: I am no shaikh, no leader, I am but a slave of Your command.

Topic :-

"Oedipus Rex" by Sophocles.

1) Introduction:

"Oedipus Rex" is a renowned tragedy written by Sophocles in ancient Greece. The play explores profound themes of fate, free will, and the nature of human existence. It was first performed around 429 BCE and continues to be widely studied and performed today.

2) Summary:

The play centers around the tragic story of Oedipus, the king of Thebes. Oedipus is known for his intelligence and his desire to solve the mystery of who killed the previous king, Laius. As he navigates through the investigation, Oedipus unconsciously begins to unravel his own dark past.

Through a series of revelations, it is disclosed that Oedipus unknowingly killed his own father, Laius, and married his own mother, Jocasta. These actions were foretold by an oracle, and Oedipus had been abandoned as an infant to prevent the prophecy from being fulfilled.

Upon learning the truth, Jocasta takes her own life in grief and Oedipus blinds himself as punishment, fulfilling the prophecy. Oedipus is then exiled from Thebes, and the play concludes with his daughter, Antigone, guiding him into his exile.

3) Critical Analysis:

"Oedipus Rex" is regarded as one of the greatest tragedies in literary history due to its exploration of universal themes and its skillful characterization. Sophocles presents a complex protagonist in Oedipus, whose tragic flaw is his unwavering determination to uncover the truth, regardless of the consequences.

The play raises questions about the extent to which individuals can control their own destinies. Despite Oedipus' efforts to avoid his fate, he ultimately fulfills the prophecy, suggesting that fate is immutable and all human actions are ultimately futile.

Sophocles also delves into the paradoxical nature of knowledge and ignorance. Oedipus, who is celebrated for his intellect, is tragically blind to his own origins and the consequences of his actions. The play explores the limits of human understanding
