Today, we honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., with a look back to his 1961 visit to Columbia. That day, Dr. King spoke to nearly 400 students from Columbia and other New York City colleges.

At our campuses, students observed religious and cultural holidays, participated in long-standing campus traditions, and gathered with friends for holiday merriment. 🎄 Columbia community members gathered in St. Paul's Chapel for the traditional “A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols” event featuring musical performances and readings. The Festival “is for everyone at the University,” says Rev. Dr. Ian Rottenberg, Columbia’s Dean of Religious Life. “It is one of the most fun and welcoming and meaningful celebrations that happen in the chapel.”
