There is something sacred about returning to the present moment, especially when we are people of color holding space for other people of color.
So often we are asked, explicitly or implicitly, to carry timelines that are not ours, to hold urgency that was never designed with our wellness in mind, to lead while simultaneously translating, protecting, and enduring. But leadership rooted in us, authentic, embodied, ancestral, begins right here: in the now.
The present moment is not a soft concept. It is a radical one. It asks us to stop performing urgency and start listening for truth. It asks us to feel our feet on the ground even as we hold vision in our hands. It reminds us that we do not have to abandon ourselves to guide anyone else forward.
I’m deeply grateful to the 𝐏𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐔𝐩 𝟒 𝐏𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 Conference for the opportunity to ground the space and set the intention. There is power in being entrusted with the beginning, the breath before the work, the stillness before the collective movement. In that moment, I felt the reminder clearly, we don’t just gather to speak, we gather to return to ourselves.
To lead people of color is to understand that presence is protection. That grounding is strategy. That stillness can be as transformative as action. When we are anchored in ourselves, we don’t just move through spaces, we shift them.
May we continue to choose presence over performance, alignment over acceleration, and truth over noise.
