📚 3 WEEKS INTO THE SCHOOL YEAR…
Here are some skills your child should be practicing as they work through math this year:
✏️ Reading the entire problem
Don’t rush! Make sure they understand what the question is asking.
🔢 Showing their work
Your child should be able to explain how they got their answer—not just write the answer.
🧠 Choosing the correct operation
Can they identify whether they need to add, subtract, multiply, divide, or use another strategy?
📊 Understanding math vocabulary
Words like difference, product, sum, estimate, equivalent, and compare should become familiar.
🔍 Checking their answer
Does the answer make sense? Can they use another strategy to check their work?
💬 Explaining their thinking
Encourage your child to say or write: “I know this because…”
These skills are just as important as getting the correct answer. 💙
