As a boy in Taiwan, George Wang watched his father screen a rerun of King Hu’s Dragon Inn. Decades later, as a final-semester student at the American Film Institute, he found himself working at King Hu’s side — until the master died suddenly, months before their Hollywood debut.

So George became his scholar instead.

Now Professor of Cinematic Arts at UH Mānoa, he’s chasing a question King Hu left behind: Was King Hu a Japanophile? The films say one thing. The late-career columns say another.
