The Bigger Picture for Massage Education in Hawai‘i

Something we have been thinking about a great deal lately is the future of professional massage education in Hawai‘i.

Did you know that Quantum is now one of only a small number of state-licensed vocational massage schools remaining in Hawai‘i?

Maintaining a Hawai‘i Department of Education-licensed vocational school requires a substantial commitment to administration, curriculum development, record keeping, compliance, faculty qualifications, student documentation, transcripts, attendance standards, and educational oversight.

It is not the easiest way to operate a massage program, but we believe there is tremendous value in maintaining a true massage vocational school model that is licensed by the State of Hawaii.

Quantum is proudly NOT a massage apprenticeship program.

As a DOE licensed school in Hawaii, one of the things we are most proud of is that Quantum School massage program graduates receive formal school transcripts and a diploma documenting their professional massage education. Our graduates have gone on to work in Hawai‘i as well as states including Oregon, Louisiana, and Alaska, and some have successfully taken the national MBLEx examination.

That portability and documentation can become very important when a therapist's life changes and they decide to move, continue their education, or pursue licensure in another state.

Hawai‘i is unusual because it continues to provide an apprenticeship pathway toward massage licensure in addition to formal vocational-school education. Apprenticeship can work well when it truly reflects a strong mentor/student relationship with an experienced practitioner who is committed to education.

However, we are increasingly concerned about the rapid expansion of apprenticeship-style massage programs on O‘ahu and the effect this may have on expectations surrounding professional massage education.

The apprenticeship model can vary tremendously from program to program. Some may provide meaningful mentorship, while others may offer much less structured classroom education, limited academic documentation, or a heavy emphasis on accumulating clinic hours.

We believe students deserve to clearly understand the difference between these educational pathways before deciding where to invest their time and money.

Students should understand what type of transcript or educational documentation they will receive, whether their training may be recognized in another state, what classroom instruction is included, who will be teaching them, how clinic training is supervised, and what opportunities their education will provide several years down the road.

Professional massage education should be about much more than becoming eligible to sit for a licensing examination.

It should prepare someone to build a safe, ethical, sustainable career.

Why Quantum School of Massage Education Matters:

Quantum currently charges approximately $14,500 for our LMT education, which is comparable to other comprehensive vocational massage programs in Hawai‘i but may seem like more then apprenticeship programs that be trading tuition costs that pay for teachers in exchange for spa labor that count towards educational hours.

During the 608 hours of the LMT training, our students learn from nearly a dozen expert teachers in various modalities, styles of massage and healing including Anatomy , Physiology, Swedish Flow, Deep Tissue, Foot Reflexology, Cranial Sacral, Manual Lymphatic Drainage, Lomi Lomi, Thai Stretch Massage, Acupressure and Shiatsu, Medical Massage including cupping, gua sha and tuning forks for myofascial release, Aromatherapy Massage, Prenatal and Infant Massage, Business and Ethics, 200 hours of clinical practice supervised. We learn how to make our own massage oils and include Reiki and Healing Touch Energy Healing Training to understand how energy works.

We believe our students receive something very different from a basic apprenticeship experience.

They learn from a large and diverse faculty of experienced professionals. They are exposed to different massage modalities, anatomy, ethics, professionalism, clinical practice, complementary healing arts, and different approaches to working with the human body.

Our student clinic is intended first and foremost to be a learning clinic — a place to practice, receive supervision, build confidence, and develop professional skills —our clinic hours are 200 hours out of 600 hours.. and rather than simply a mechanism for completing a required number of treatments or hours and also requiring students to provide those clients in exchange for a seemingly reduced tuition.

That difference matters to us.

As educators, we also have an opportunity to help protect the long-term value of massage therapy as a profession in Hawai‘i.

Hawai‘i only recently introduced Continuing Education (CE) requirements for massage therapists.

One of the most rewarding things we have experienced since this policy started has been bringing experienced massage therapists together with current students in our CE classes. We have met wonderful therapists who have practiced for many years, and it has been exciting to see experienced practitioners and newer students learning side by side.

We have attracted both local and students from all over the nation to study at Quantum School, and these graduates have gone on to do great things for our healing arts community, volunteering at the Neo-Natal Care unit, working with bereavement groups, working with hospice, volunteering at special olympics, showing up in force to help offer relaxing touch and holistic care for communities during natuaral disasters.

The power of the massage training and the rights and responsibilities having a license to touch is life changing for both the therapist and the person receiving quality somatic care for healing and health.

That is the professional healing arts community we want Quantum School to continue building.

We hope this helps people better understand the difference between a student with 600+ hours of a state licensed vocational massage school with certified and trained teachers who specialize in massage education, and those students who have found that an apprenticeship may mean just free labor working in a spa in exchange for a lower cost training that won't transfer beyond Hawaii. So, sky is the limit, don't limit yourself with the bare minimum requirements and a few temporary education short cuts. Be your best self!!
