La Hoihoi Ea commemorates the just restoration of sovereignty to the Hawaiian kingdom in 1843 to Kamehameha III, Kauikeaouli, by British Admiral Richard Thomas. This act was memorialized when Kamehameha III uttered the famous words, “ua mau ke ea o ka aina i ka pono” and established Thomas Square as the first public space of the kingdom. LHE today has become a time that the Hawaiian community gathers and celebrates publicly the restoration of our identity, language, knowledge, culture, arts, history and consciousness. LHE is about celebrating our national legacy with each other by sharing stories, passing on knowledge,
strengthening communities and reclaiming space. This event is free and open to the public as a means to help educate the larger community about this seminal event in Hawaiian history and to celebrate the restoration and vitality of the Hawaiian culture, arts and people. LHE will feature live music, poetry, political speakers, community- facilitated discussions on important Hawaiian issues, lomilomi, ono food, keiki activities and bouncy houses, Hawaiian games, educational booths, kui ai demonstrations, community art projects, carving demos, local clothing and merchandise, kava lactones, laau lapaau, a native plant sale, organic local farm produce and much more.
