Punahou School joins our nation in remembering all those lost in the attacks of September 11, 2001. Among them were two outstanding Punahou alumni, Richard Lee ’86 and Heather Ho ’87, whose lives remain part of the story and memory of our School community.

We hold their families, friends and classmates in our hearts, along with all those who continue to carry the loss of that day. To mark the 25th anniversary, members of our faculty, staff and student body gathered privately on campus to remember Richard and Heather, and to reflect on the way that their compassion, purpose, and commitment may inspire us as well.

Punahou School is proud to celebrate our seniors named as National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalists this year. Their academic excellence places them among the top 1% of high school students nationwide.

Selected from a pool of more than 1.3 million entrants, semifinalists are recognized for their exceptional performance on the PSAT/NMSQT. They now advance to the next stage of the competition, where they have the opportunity to earn one of 6,930 National Merit Scholarships totaling nearly $26 million.

Sixth graders are bringing robotic breakdancers to life in DTE! Using LEGO SPIKE Prime and block-based coding, students built, programmed and personalized their dancers before choreographing routines set to music. Along the way, they put their problem-solving and debugging skills to the test while combining engineering with creativity. After exploring gears and pulleys in the Design Technology and Engineering lab, third graders took on a design challenge inspired by a familiar campus visitor: geckos. Working in teams, students researched, sketched and fabricated humane gecko traps, putting design thinking and problem-solving into practice from idea to prototype. The cast of Punahou’s “The Lion King Jr.” welcomed special guests Ben Jeffrey, who currently plays Pumbaa in “The Lion King” on Broadway, and Rafael Sardina, a TV, film and stage actor.

The actors shared their journeys and offered valuable advice, encouraging students to stay curious, remain a “sponge” and be both interesting and interested – lessons for the stage and beyond.
