A new chapter in HPU Athletics is beginning. 🌊

Hawaiʻi Pacific University is launching Hawaiʻi’s first collegiate surf team, with the inaugural team set to take the water next spring.

The new program creates an opportunity for Hawaiʻi high school surfers to continue competing at the collegiate level while earning their degree, without having to leave home to pursue their sport.

HPU Surf will compete primarily in Hawaiʻi throughout the season, with the 2027 National Scholastic Surfing Association Championship serving as the capstone event.

The program grew out of more than a decade of work by surf advocates Davin Kazama, Hawaiʻi’s state coordinator for high school surfing, and his daughter Sunny Kazama, who surfs collegiately at the University of San Diego. Their work helped pave the way for surfing to become a statewide sanctioned interscholastic sport in Hawaiʻi, with the first state championship season held in spring 2026.

Now, HPU is helping create the next pathway for Hawaiʻi surfers, one that allows them to compete at the collegiate level while staying home.

Building connection, community and support among our wāhine. 💙

HPU Athletics recently hosted its first Wāhine in Numbers event, bringing together female student-athletes from across our teams to connect, share experiences and support one another.

From the field to the classroom and beyond, creating spaces where our women can build meaningful relationships and lift each other up is an important part of the HPU experience.

As part of Hawai‘i Tech Week, The John F. Scarpa Entrepreneurial Pathway at Hawai‘i Pacific University hosted Build with AI: Student Hackathon, a hands-on experience where college students worked in teams to turn ideas into working solutions, from researching a problem and developing a business model to creating a prototype and pitching their ideas.

Students weren’t just learning about AI, they were learning how to use it as a tool to think, experiment, solve problems and bring ideas to life.

This is what experiential learning looks like at HPU: giving students the tools and opportunities to build what’s next. 🌊
