📐 Bilingual Learning in Action!

A great example of ASL-English bilingual instruction happened in math!

Students identified an acute angle visually, expressed the concept in ASL, and then connected it to the written English word acute.

Concept/Image → ASL → English Print

This strategy, known as chaining, intentionally builds connections between concepts, ASL, and written English—supporting students in developing both content knowledge and language.

History is being made right here in Hawaiʻi for the Deaf community!

The University of Hawaiʻi held its first Deaf Museum, celebrating Deaf history, culture, identity, and achievements.

Our middle and high school students and staff had the wonderful opportunity to meet Yvette I. Ibarra-Keohuloa, who is Deaf and a member of the royal family. Her presentation inspired our students to embrace their Deaf identity and learn more about their lineage and history.

Students were fascinated by the exhibitions and artifacts showcasing 100 years of Deaf achievements in Hawaiʻi—from drama and the arts to the Miss Deaf Hawaiʻi Pageant, the World Deaf Surfing Championships, and so much more!

A truly meaningful experience for our students to connect with and celebrate their rich Deaf history and heritage!

A few weeks ago, we were honored to welcome special guest speaker Mr. Mark Morales, who shared powerful personal stories and experiences with our students.

He encouraged our students to embrace their Deaf identity and culture, be proud of who they are, and remember where they come from. His stories about growing up as the only Deaf person in his family, “Dinner Table Syndrome,” and the importance of literacy gave our students meaningful messages to carry with them.

Mahalo nui loa, Mr. Morales, for inspiring our students and reminding them that their identity, culture, and future matter! 🌺✨

Dear HSDB ʻOhana,

Due to anticipated impacts from Hurricane Lowell, our campus will be closed to students and staff on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

All school-related activities scheduled for Tuesday are also canceled, including athletic events and practices, extracurricular activities, meetings and other school events.

We know families may be making their own preparations as the storm approaches. Please take care of yourselves and your ʻohana, stay safe and follow guidance from state and county emergency management officials.

We will continue to monitor conditions closely with Department and emergency management officials and will provide updates on school operations as more information becomes available.
