Hauʻoli lā hānau, e ka Mōʻī Kalākaua!
David Laʻamea Kamanakapuʻu Māhinulani Naloiaehuokalani Lumialani Kalākaua was born on this day in 1836. On November 16, 1874, his first birthday after becoming king, there was a great gathering at Kawaiahaʻo Church. This was but a day before he was to set off on his journey to Washington, DC, to negotiate a reciprocity treaty between Hawaiʻi and the United States.
This photograph was taken while on his return trip, at New York on Christmas Day, 1874.

Repost: Anakala Rick San Nicholas
. .
Aloha FB friends! I wanted to share my latest completed feather cloak of the Hawaiian Legacy Collection that I am working on for the Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative. This is the cloak of Kalaniōpu'u, a replica of the cloak in the Bishop Museum collection and also known as the largest feather cloak known to exist. The cloak is 62" long from the neck line to the base and 108" (nine feet) wide at widest points from left to right. This cloak is certainly the largest cloak that I have made so far and equal to the largest cloak known today. The mahiole photos shows the helmet that will go with this cloak (also known to have belonged to Kalaniōpu'u). I am very happy with the completion of this milestone cloak and I look forward to the day that it will be first exhibited for the public to view. Aloha, Rick
