Each year, Hawaii TESOL holds a variety of events, such as socials, workshops, and conferences to bring together the teaching community. Members and participants vary greatly and come from Hawaii, the mainland USA, and from many countries abroad.

Hawai'i TESOL invites you to participate in the Hawai‘i TESOL Annual Conference to be held at Brigham Young University–Hawai‘i on Saturday, February 15, 2025.

Theme: Empowering Educators and Learners: Technology at the Heart of Language Teaching

Plenary Address: Dr. Justin Shewell, President of TESOL International Association

Join us for a day of learning, inspiration, and collaboration at the Annual Hawai‘i TESOL Conference! This year’s theme, “Empowering Educators and Learners: Technology at the Heart of Language Teaching,” invites language educators and researchers to share insights, strategies, and innovations that place technology at the center of language instruction.

We are honored to welcome Dr. Justin Shewell, President of TESOL International Association, as our esteemed keynote speaker. Dr. Shewell is a widely respected leader in the field of technology-enhanced language teaching, and his keynote address will inspire us to rethink how digital tools can empower educators and learners alike.

Proposal Submissions

Research and Practices
We invite proposals that explore a wide range of research and practices related to this year’s theme, including:

- Integrating technology in language classrooms
- Digital tools for enhancing student engagement and motivation
- Online and blended language learning models
- Technology and assessment in language learning
- Challenges and opportunities in technology adoption for language teaching
- Innovative practices in teacher training for digital integration
Additionally, we welcome proposals related to general language learning research and practices that offer valuable insights to our TESOL community.

Types of Presentation
20-minute Quick Share: A concise 15-minute presentation on an idea, strategy, tool, or update on research or teaching projects, followed by a 5-minute Q&A.

40-minute Paper: A 30-minute presentation of a paper addressing any practical or theoretical aspect of language teaching or research, followed by a 10-minute Q&A.

40-minute Workshop: A hands-on demonstration of any practical aspect of language teaching, engaging participants in interactive learning.

40-minute Panel Discussion: A panel featuring multiple presenters, focused on discussing current issues in TESOL education and fostering dialogue among participants.

Poster Session: An informal poster presentation to share teaching practices or research findings with participants at a designated time.

Submission Requirements
To submit your proposal, please provide the following information on the form:

1. Main Contact Email Address
2. Presenter and Co-presenters’ Names
3. Affiliation (college, school, company, etc.)
4. Title of Presentation (maximum of 10 words)
5. Presentation Category (Quick Share, Paper, Workshop, Panel Discussion, or Poster)
6. Abstract (maximum of 250 words): Include a brief background of the topic and a synopsis of the presentation that explains its purpose, benefit to participants, and methodology.
- Intended Target Audience (e.g., primary/secondary/university students, novice instructors, experienced instructors)
- Level of Audience Participation (none, question/answer, highly interactive)
7. 40-word Biographical Note (include bios for co-presenters)

This year, Kapiolani Community College has graciously offered to host the Opening Social. Please spread the word, as this event is FREE for members and non-members alike. Hawai‘i TESOL invites you to participate in our first-ever hybrid 2024 Language Experience event, offered in-person and online simultaneously!

This year, we will be learning Korean, and our amazing instructor will be Leeseul Park. She is currently a PhD candidate in the Department of East Asian Literature and Languages, as well as an MA graduate of the SLS program!

For our in-person attendees, this event will kick-off at 6pm for a Meet & Greet session with the instructor and HITESOL members in Moore Hall 109, hosted by Hawaiʻi English Language Program (HELP). (Light dinner and refreshments will be provided.)

At 6:30pm, our in-person attendees will move to Moore Hall 224 and we will welcome our online attendees to begin Leeseul's Korean language lesson for the beginner level, which will be taught simultaneously. In addition to learning about the Korean language, we hope that all of the attendees can observe what it's like to adeptly teach a language lesson in a hybrid context.

Place: Online via Zoom.

The Hawai‘i TESOL Board would like to announce that the registration page for this year's annual conference is now open.

This year’s Hawai‘i TESOL theme focuses on Roots and Horizons – Bridging Tradition with Tomorrow’s Innovations in TESOL. We have invited Dr. Betsy Gilliland from University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, to give our keynote plenary address. Dr. Gilliland has edited and authored multiple publications focused on teacher development and action research, across multiple contexts.

The conference is 100% IN-PERSON this year. To ensure meal availability, please register by February 1, 2024. Registrations received after that date will not be guaranteed lunch. We look forward to learning and socializing with all of you on the beautiful BYUH campus!
