INSTRUCTOR SPOTLIGHT: Meet Blandina Peterson of Fayetteville, NC! 🥁✨
In Fayetteville, North Carolina, seniors ages 55+ are discovering just how Fun, Exciting, and Ecstatic Drums Alive® can be, thanks to instructor Blandina Peterson. Since July 2025, Blandina has been lighting up two senior recreation and fitness centers with energizing rhythms, big smiles, and a whole lot of joy.
A New Instructor With Big Drums Alive® Energy
Blandina's Drums Alive® journey began after the 2025 Drums Alive Conference, where she felt supported, encouraged, and inspired to step into the role of instructor. She especially loved learning how to create 32-count choreography, a skill that had always felt challenging before, and appreciated the variety of songs, choreographies, and educational sessions available. That experience gave her the confidence and tools she needed to bring Drums Alive® back to Fayetteville.
Now, she teaches two Drums Alive® classes each week at senior recreation and fitness centers, serving women and men ages 55 and above. As the only Drums Alive® instructor in Fayetteville, she is proud to offer something truly unique to her local community.
Why She Keeps Showing Up To The Beat
Ask Blandina why she keeps teaching, and her answer is simple: Drums Alive® is fun. She loves the history of the program, the fact that it is evidence-based, and the way the Master Trainers model choreography step-by-step before performing it to music at full tempo. Having "tons of choreographies" to learn from keeps her inspired and constantly growing.
Since starting, she has already noticed the program expanding, especially with tools like the app that make it easier for instructors to access content and stay connected. She is excited to keep learning, keep drumming, and keep bringing this powerful format to her seniors.
Participants Who Shine From The Inside Out
Blandina's favorite part of teaching is her participants. She lights up when she talks about their enthusiasm, all the smiles, and the visible fun they have in every class. One story that sticks with her is of a participant in her 80s who came up after class to share how much the session made her smile. People around her were asking why she was so happy, and she proudly told them it was because of drumming and how good it made her feel.
In class, Blandina can see the impact Drums Alive® has on her participants physically, emotionally, and socially. They especially love the moments when they travel around the room during certain songs to greet one another. Those simple circuits of movement, eye contact, and friendly connection bring the whole room to life and create a strong sense of community.
A Grandmother, Veteran, And Role Model
Beyond the studio, Blandina is a grandmother who loves sharing drumming with her granddaughters, passing on her love of movement and rhythm to the next generation. In her sixties and a disabled U.S. Army Veteran, she is a powerful example of resilience, service, and staying active at every age.
She is already looking forward to the next Drums Alive® conference and is ready to learn new choreography, connect with other instructors, and soak up more wisdom from Carrie Ekins, the Master Trainers, and the whole team working behind the scenes to move the program forward.
Her advice to new instructors is short and from the heart: Drums Alive® is very supportive and here for us every step of the way.
