The Hawaii Chapter is an active, energetic, and lively group. We are graduates, former students, faculty, staff, and friends of Silliman University, Dumaguete City, Philippines. Its members are bound by the Silliman spirit and unique camaraderie only experienced by those who have been there.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Lowell, the island is slowly but surely recovering. We're encouraged to see more hotels and small businesses reopen in the past few days, and we look forward to sharing more positive updates in the coming weeks.🌺❀️

🌺 Hawaiian kākau is more than a tattoo. It is a traditional Hawaiian practice with deep cultural roots ✨

In traditional kākau, designs may connect a person to moΚ»okΕ«Κ»auhau (genealogy) 🌿, family πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦, identity πŸ–€, Κ»aumakua (ancestral guardians) 🌊, and kuleana (responsibility) 🀲. Meanings can be deeply personal and contextual, so every pattern does not have one universal meaning.

One traditional form is alaniho 🦡, a leg tattoo that can extend from the hip toward the ankle. Traditionally, kākau was applied through hand tapping using specialized tools such as the mōlī.

Today, traditional practitioner Keone Nunes continues to help preserve and perpetuate Hawaiian kākau

More than decoration, kākau can carry genealogy, identity, responsibility, and cultural connection on the body, linking generations through a living Hawaiian tradition ✨🌺
