We are a part of UH Mānoaʻs Hawai‘inuiākea School of Hawaiian Knowledge, the Kauhale has two kuleana:

(1) To serve Hawai‘inuiākea undergraduate and graduate majors (Hawaiian language & Hawaiian Studies)
(2) To serve all Native Hawaiian students at UH Mānoa. The core values that drive our Native Hawaiian Student Services program include:
- Create and promote a Hawaiian place for learning
- Promote and advocate the learning of Hawaiian language, studies and education
- Recognize our kuleana (responsibility) to honor the traditions of our indigenous people and to promote social justice for Native Hawaiians
- Educate a highly knowledgeable, skilled, flexible, world-class Native Hawaiian work force

Native Hawaiian Student Services welcomes Dr. Tiffany Ing to our office next week Wednesday, September 23rd from 12:30 to 1:30 PM to talk about How the Nineteenth-Century Hawaiian Language Newspapers Provide Greater Context to the Illness and Final Death of David Kalākaua. Dr. Ing will be sharing more about the health of King Kalākaua before his visit to Southern California to supposedly recuperate. She will showcase some ʻatikala that talked about the severity of his decline.

Hawaiʻinuiākea School of Hawaiian Knoweldge (HSHK) would like to invite you to Eia Hawaiʻinuiākea, Open House, event on Friday, September 25, 2026. The event will be held from 3:30 PM through 8:00 PM. Come and learn more about Hawaiʻinuiākea! Launa with us and enjoy pupus, ʻōlelo, mele and more!
Join us for a fun filled event including;  

* 3:30 PM Meet with the our HSHK Departments and Walk through our Resource Fair to learn about resources available to students
* 4:30 PM Our HSHK Dean and Directors will open our event and welcome attendees
* 4:45 PM Hear from an HSHK Alumni Panel as they discuss “ Hawaiʻinuiākea Graduates in Career and Serving Community”
* 5:30 PM Eia Hawaiinuiakea Oli to be taught by Dr. Keawe Lopes
* 6:00 PM Mea ‘Ai and Mele, including performances by Hōkū Zuttermeister, Zachary Lum, Chad Takatsugi, and more!

On September 2nd, 1838, our mōʻi wahine and namesake of the building that houses our keʻena was born– Liliʻuokalani. For her lā hānau, we invited haumāna to partake in workshops related to her life and interests. From making lei for Liliʻu to creating crazy quilts similar to her own, we mahalo all who celebrated our mōʻī along with us.

Whether you’ve never played in your life or looking to learn more strategy; Kōnane is really easy to learn but hard to master. We’ll have boards set up with free snacks and tea.

This presentation will share Shayʻs moʻolelo regarding her journey of writing and navigating contemporary literature as a Hawaiian. There will be a book raffle of the Killing Spell for those who attend!
