ART 128 - Interface Programming 1
This Spring 2026 the New Media Arts Program (NMA) at Kapiolani Community College is offering courses in graphic design and web design, such as ART 128 Interface Programming 1, an introductory-level frontend web development course that introduces HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. This hands-on course walks students through the process of building custom designed websites from scratch, including how to convert a UI designed in Figma into a fully functioning website. No prior coding experience required.
This hybrid online class is accessible either remotely via Zoom or in-person in a computer lab on campus, or any combination that best suits your schedule. Level up your creativity while learning graphic design and web development in New Media Arts Interface Design classes.

Type & Protocol: Why Knowing Type Matters - Hanna Shibata
This project was created in Art 120 Introduction to Typography by Hanna Shibata .shibata. In this project-based learning course, students put together a custom book as an applied, hands-on way to learn typography by setting type. In the second half of the semester, Hanna extended her project work to include custom designs for other media, including packaging for a soft drink and a vinyl record cover.

This spring 2026 the New Media Arts Program (NMA) at Kapiʻolani Community College is offering courses in graphic design and web design, such as ART 120 Intro to Typography, where students can learn about fonts and how to design with type. This hands-on course applies typography terminology, history, and theory through the exploration of letterforms and word compositions using page layout software.

Emiri Miyaji - Down to Earth Logo
Today we are looking at an identity design project that was completed in ART 129 Corporate Identity, where students go through the full design process of establishing an identity system for a client. Designer Emiri Miyaji tried to stay true to the brand’s roots while incorporating a sense of timelessness and modernity, as well as being versatile and easily adaptable across various customer touchpoints, including signage, merchandise, and web platforms.

Today, we are looking at the graphic design for book covers and a website design suggestion for an existing podcast channel, . During the first year at the New Media Arts program, Hanna Shibata created a series of book covers inspired by the podcast episodes and built a website from scratch.

ART 229 - Interface Design 1
This Spring 2026 the New Media Arts Program (NMA) at Kapiʻolani Community College is offering courses in graphic design and web design, such as ART 229 Interface Design 1, an introductory-level User Interface Design (UI) course for designing custom websites, including related concepts from Information Architecture (IA), User Experience Design (UX), and User-Centered-Design (UCD).
In this hands-on course, students use Figma to layout content for multiple screen sizes, embrace best practices by choosing appropriate design patterns, explore navigational systems and menus, and synthesize the design to ultimately create an intuitive interface and enjoyable user experience that meets the needs and requirements for clients and target audiences.
