Learning facial anatomy is an essential part of dental assisting, and our students are finding innovative, creative, and hands-on ways to make these important concepts easier to understand and remember. 🎨🧠

By identifying and reviewing the different landmarks of the face, students are strengthening their knowledge of anatomy while connecting what they learn in the classroom to the skills they will use in the clinical setting. Activities like this encourage teamwork, critical thinking, creativity, and active learning — all while making the learning experience more engaging and memorable. 👏📚

🦷🧤 Safety Starts With Knowledge—and Knowledge Builds Confidence! 💪✨

Our Kapiʻolani CC Dental Assisting students brought learning to life by acting out a real-world case study focused on workplace safety, infection control, chemical hazards, and dental unit waterline (DUWL) safety. 🧪💧

Through teamwork and critical thinking, students identified potential risks, discussed the roles of OSHA, CDC, and EPA, and developed immediate and long-term solutions to protect both patients and the dental team. 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

These are the moments where future dental assistants learn that their role is more than assisting chairside—it is about speaking up, protecting others, maintaining compliance, and becoming confident advocates for safety in the dental office. 🌺🦷

Dental Assistants are an essential part of the dental healthcare team. They help protect our patients, support our dentists, maintain safe clinical environments, and keep dental practices moving every day.

According to the DANB 2026 Dental Assistants Salary and Satisfaction Survey, the national median hourly wage for a DANB Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) is $28/hour, compared with $24/hour for a non-certified Dental Assistant—approximately 17% more.

📍 Now let’s look at Hawaiʻi.

The latest U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics May 2025 wage data shows Dental Assistants in Hawaiʻi earning approximately $20.76/hour on average, with a median wage of about $21.50/hour.

Meanwhile, the MIT Living Wage Calculator estimates that a single adult with no children in Hawaiʻi needs approximately $31.01/hour to meet basic living expenses. Hawaiʻi’s overall price level is also about 10% higher than the national average, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.

🎓 Dental Assistants invest significant time and effort learning proper infection prevention and control 🧤, radiation health and safety ☢️, general chairside assisting 🦷, patient care, sterilization, dental procedures, communication, and much more.

Some go even further by completing formal education and earning national certification.

🦷🧤 Closing Out the Week with Critical Thinking & Infection Control! 🌺✨

Last week, our Dental Assisting students brought infection control concepts to life through an in-class case study role-play at our fictional “Island Breeze Dental.” 🎭🦷

Students acted out a real-world scenario involving damp instrument packages after sterilization and a positive weekly spore test. They had to decide how to respond when workflow pressures conflicted with proper sterilization procedures and patient safety. 🧼♨️⚠️

Through this activity, students practiced how to recognize potential contamination, explain why wet packages should not be used, respond appropriately to a sterilization failure, communicate concerns professionally with the dental team, and prioritize patient safety over schedule demands. 💬✅

These scenarios help prepare our students for the responsibility that comes with infection prevention in the dental setting—because protecting patients and maintaining safe clinical practices must always come first. 💪🦷🌺

🦷✨ Hands-On Learning in Dental Materials! ✨🦷

Our Dental Assisting students are building their knowledge and clinical skills by learning about the different types and viscosities of polysiloxane impression materials used in dentistry. 🧪👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

Students explored how these materials are selected and used for primary and final impressions in the fabrication of fixed and removable dental prostheses, including crowns, bridges, and removable appliances. 🦷🔬 They also learned the importance of proper material selection, mixing, handling, tray preparation, and timing to help produce an accurate impression for the dental laboratory.

Every hands-on experience brings our students one step closer to becoming confident, knowledgeable, and skilled dental professionals! 🌺💪

🦷🩻🌺 Learning Beyond the Textbook: Dental Radiography Safety in Action! 🌺🩻🦷

Our Kapiʻolani Community College Dental Assisting students brought their case study to life through a real-world patient role-playing activity focused on dental radiography safety and patient communication. 🎭💬

In this scenario, students worked with a “new patient” who had not visited the dentist in nearly 10 years and was concerned about having a full series of dental radiographs taken. Students practiced how to listen carefully to the patient’s concerns, explain why dental radiographs are an important part of a comprehensive examination, discuss radiation safety, and communicate in a way that helps the patient feel informed and comfortable with their care. ☢️🛡️

Activities like this help our students develop more than technical skills. They strengthen professional communication, patient education, critical thinking, empathy, and confidence—all essential qualities of a successful dental assistant. Every conversation is an opportunity to build trust and help patients better understand the importance of their oral healthcare. 🦷💙👏🏽

🦷✨ Happy First Day of Dental Assisting Lab! ✨🦷

Today was an exciting milestone for our Dental Assisting students as they officially began developing their hands-on laboratory skills! 🙌🌺

Students learned and practiced the process of taking alginate impressions, properly pouring impressions with Type II dental plaster, and creating their own study cast models. 🧤🦷 From mixing materials to handling impressions and producing accurate casts, each step gave our students valuable experience with skills they will continue to use throughout their dental assisting education.

Hands-on learning is where knowledge truly comes to life! 📚➡️🦷 These experiences help our students build confidence, improve their technique, and understand the importance of accuracy, teamwork, infection control, and attention to detail in the dental setting. 💪✨

We are proud of the hard work, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn that our students brought to their very first lab! This is only the beginning of many more exciting skills and experiences ahead. 🌟👏
