Happy Aloha Friday! Time to hit the weights.
Mass times acceleration equals force. Therefore, we need to have sufficient muscle mass in order to generate a decent amount of force. We also need the fast twitch muscle to get the whole mass into motion - in a speedy manner. Weight training helps build fast twitch muscle. Anyone who is not training in weight bearing exercise twice per week is not training martial arts at optimum level. They're missing out on a huge benefit.
To target fast-twitch (Type II) muscle fibers, focus on high-intensity loads (>70% of your 1-rep max) and maximum-velocity movements rather than high reps. The goal is to produce maximum force in the shortest amount of time, engaging your central nervous system to recruit these high-threshold fibers.

I've just started reading this new work from George Mattson sensei and I can see already the immense value in his latest book. I recommend it to any serious Uechi-ryu practitioner. Or, to any martial artist, for that matter.
Martial Arts can be a life-long journey. It doesn't matter when you start. As long as you keep going!
