We’re excited to share that our MSW curriculum is expanding this Fall with a new elective titled: Core Components and Skills for Trauma-Informed Practice, taught by Dr. Francie Julien-Chinn!

The course will prepare MSW students to better understand the impacts of trauma and build skills to support healing and resilience among children and families.

In preparation for bringing the curriculum to UH Mānoa, Dr. Julien-Chinn participated in the 5th Faculty Summer Institute in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where she joined 20 faculty members from across the country for training, shared learning, and collaboration.

UH Mānoa Social Work connection from American Samoa in Honolulu! 🌺

We were so happy to see UH Mānoa Social Work alum and Adjunct Faculty Dr. Julia Foifua, MSW, connecting with incoming MSW student Liliatupu Asotau, who is beginning her MSW pathway through the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa while continuing to live and work in American Samoa.

Moments like this remind us of the importance of building connections across generations of social workers and strengthening opportunities for social work education throughout the Pacific. We are excited to welcome Liliatupu to the UH Mānoa Social Work ʻfamily and grateful to alumni like Dr. Foifua who continue to support and inspire the next generation of social workers!

📢 The ASWB Social Work Licensing Exams have changed!

As of August 3, 2026, all ASWB licensing exams are now based on the 2026 Exam Blueprint.

Here’s what you need to know:
✔️ 3 content areas instead of 4
✔️ 122 total questions (110 scored + 12 unscored)
✔️ More three-option multiple-choice questions
✔️ Greater emphasis on applying social work knowledge, ethical decision-making, and professional reasoning—not just memorization
✔️ The 4-hour testing time remains the same

☀️ It's been a busy summer!

In June, our faculty and staff attended the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Conference in Washington, D.C.

Our Workforce Development Hub team presented findings from our report, "We Are All Interconnected: Hawaiʻi Nonprofits Navigating Federal Shifts in Early 2025," bringing Hawaiʻi's perspectives to a national audience. We hope our collaborative community report inspires similar partnerships and workforce conversations across the country. For a summary of this report, visit the link in our Bio or here:

The conference was also a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with colleagues from the NASW Guam and Puerto Rico Chapters, as well as fellow social workers from Hawaiʻi and other states, and leaders in the profession. There is always great energy in coming together with social workers, clinicians, educators, and advocates who are committed to strengthening communities and advancing the profession.

Mahalo to everyone we connected with—we look forward to continuing these conversations and collaborations!

A new UH News article highlights the collaboration between the state’s Office of Wellness and Resilience with the Thompson School’s Faculty. The program equips professionals with the tools to recognize and respond to trauma, supporting Hawaiʻi's goal of becoming the nation's first trauma-informed state.
