Our last activity for Spring was the end-of-semester campus tour and Q/A at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. This gave students the opportunity to see the connection between HCC and the University's main campus at Manoa, and between their current activities and future study plans in degree programs within the University of Hawaii system. The tour was led by a friendly Manoa senior-level student.

The Music on the Lawn at the Hawaii State Art Museum event turned into an art gallery walk for First Friday. We split into three groups and visited various art galleries and concession areas. Music on the Lawn will return to the Hawaii State Art Museum next month.
A nice time was had by all at the Honolulu Contemporary Museum. Our docent engaged students in stories behind the art and the people who create it. We also met the artist in residence, Fay Ku. The art and atmosphere of the location drew students in. This was one of my favorite events.
Last Saturday, February 6 we enjoyed the Honolulu Nature Center at Makiki Valley. First, we learned about native Hawaiian plants and animals at the Hawaii Nature Center. Then we braved the wild and hiked along one of the area's pristine public trails. Mr. Blue Bird on your shoulder? Well, in this case it was the Red Billed Hawaiian Thrush enjoying some the African Tulips in bloom at the time!
HO HO HO! The 2009 Holiday Party!
Last Wednesday, December 2nd, we cruised over to UH Manoa for a student-led tour of the campus. We were able to see the the layout of the campus, and ask questions about costs, programs, and student-life to UH students. HCC Students met with a UH professor and saw parts of a linguistics presentation. How fun!

On Wednesday we enjoyed the Honolulu City Council’s monthly public meeting at Honolulu Hale. We met with representatives Rod Tam and Christine Kobayashi as well as other staff members. The meeting itself took only 30 minutes and was an example of how the city is managed. Students were made welcome and encouraged to take part in such meetings in the future, and to testify on city bills.
