Wind can turn everyday rubbish into “runaway trash” faster than you think! When lightweight plastic bags, wrappers, and cups get caught by a gust of wind, they travel through our neighborhoods and land in the street. The next rain can easily flush them straight down our storm drains, which act like highways to the ocean.

We can make a positive impact on trash with simple, everyday habits that can be used at home, at the park, and in our truck beds to keep roadways clear and marine life safe 🪸

Cigarette butts are the #1 most common item collected during Hawaiʻi beach cleanups. While they might look like harmless paper or cotton, cigarette filters are actually made from nonbiodegradable plastic fibers. When flicked onto a sidewalk or out a car window, rain and storm water runoff can sweep them directly into our storm drains, flushing toxic chemicals, heavy metals, and microplastics straight out to our coral reefs.

School is back in session 📚 Start the school year strong and dive into our fun, hands-on activities that show elementary-level keiki how our storm drain system and the ocean are connected! We’ll highlight the importance of doing our part to keep storm drains clean and teach students about the impact of pollution on marine life. Kids will discover simple actions they can take to protect Hawaiʻi’s marine ecosystem.

If you're stuck with a bunch of broken or stubby crayons, don't toss them out just yet. You can give them a colorful new life with this simple weekend upcycling project!

Throwing crayons in the trash seems harmless, but because they're made of paraffin wax (a petroleum product), they can take decades to break down. By melting them into fun new shapes, you can keep waste out of our landfills and teach your keiki the value of reusing material.

All you'll need:
🖍️ Old crayons
🧁 Silicone molds
🥮 Baking sheets
⚡ Oven or toaster oven

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation’s Storm Water Management Program has created the Hawaiʻi Storm Patrol Young Professionals Program to help prepare the next generation of environmental leaders.

Through education, community engagement, leadership development and hands-on learning, the program introduces students to storm water management and the many careers connected to protecting Hawaiʻi’s waterways. Participants build skills to create a healthier future for Hawaiʻi while learning how everyday actions affect the water around us.
