Missed yesterday’s Zoom info session for next semester’s Paris Study Abroad program? No worries!

Prof. Monica LaBriola will be hosting another information session for prospective study abroad students! This in-person event will take place on Tuesday, September 22nd, at 11am at Moore Hall 153A. Join her to learn more about the two courses being offered, HIST 288 and HIST 366, and what to expect while studying abroad in Paris, France!

Congratulations to History PhD student Oishi Dhar for her recent presentation at this year’s British Association for South Asian Studies Conference!

Oishi’s presentation, “Steam, Patriotism and Subaltern Mobility: Indigenous Maritime Enterprises and the Politics of Technology in Colonial Bengal,” was well received by audience members.

The conference took place from September 11-13, 2026, in London, United Kingdom.

Congratulations to History doctoral candidates Kale Kanaeholo and SeungHyeon (Scott) Pyo, both of whom received scholarships from Phi Alpha Theta!

Kale received the John Pine Memorial Doctoral Scholarship while SeungHyeon received the Phi Alpha Theta Doctoral Student Scholarship.

Congratulations to History doctoral candidate Xinli Zhang, who presented at multiple conferences this summer!

Xinli was a member speaker for the event “New Voices of Chinese Religions,” hosted by the Society of Study for Chinese Religions (SSCR) in conjunction with the European Association for Chinese Studies (EACS). Xinli also presented an individual paper at the Ca’ Foscari University in Venice, Italy. Finally, Xinli virtually presented at this year’s PCB-AHA conference and received a Graduate Student Travel Award.

A busy summer indeed!

The History Department is saddened to announce the passing of Professor Emeritus John J. Stephan.

Prof. Stephan taught in the department from 1970 until his retirement in 2001. Educated at Harvard and the University of London, where he received his PhD in 1969, Prof. Stephan taught undergraduate and graduate courses in the History of Japan, Japanese Diplomatic History, and Russia in Asia & the Pacific. One of his most significant contributions to UH Mānoa is his vast research collection—the John J. Stephan Papers—which is now housed at Hamilton Library.

Details about a memorial service for Prof. Stephan will be announced at a later date.

We send our condolences and aloha to his ʻohana and friends during this difficult time.

The UH Mānoa History Department is excited to announce the upcoming Organization of American Historians’ “History in Place Symposium”!

Hosted by UH Mānoa’s College of Education, the inaugural theme is “Coasts, Currents, and Islands: Exploring the interwoven histories of the United States & the Pacific.” This symposium is a two-day event (October 10-11, 2026) at the College of Education at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa that blends foundational experiential learning through mandatory huakaʻi (learning experience) with collaborative, participant-driven discussions to foster a deeper understanding of place as history.

Prof. Cheehyung Harrison delivered a distinguished lecture at Sogang University on “A Story of Constant Struggle: The Comfort Women Movement in the DPRK.”

Following the lecture, Prof. Kim joined a roundtable discussion with Sogang University undergraduate students, sharing insights on graduate study, academic careers, and research in US institutions.

Congratulations to Prof. Kim on a successful lecture and thank you to the Department of History at Sogang University for hosting such a meaningful event!
