Twenty Five Years Ago this morning, I had already made the decision to make teaching my profession. A couple of months earlier, I left the agency I had been working for in Virginia and moved back to TN. As I was figuring out how to build my teaching career, I took a job with a small department, primarily to help them improve their FTO program. I was also part of the multi-jurisdictional Crisis Negotiations Team in the County and we were in a training session that morning with Nashville PD. After the first plane hit, they rolled an AV Cart into the classroom and had CNN on, but silent. After the second plane hit, we turned the sound up and pagers started going off all around the room. Not too long after that, the training session was cancelled and we all went on our ways into a very different world.

9/11 instigated massive changes in both Law Enforcement and Military training & doctrines. The timing aligned perfectly with my choice to leave law enforcement work to teach. That fact has never been lost when I think about the tragedy. I know that many of my peers and friends also have lives that were drastically affected by the changes that began that day. Thousands of lives were ended and Billions of lives were changed by those attacks. Of courses, Millions more would die in the wars that followed and Tens of Millions would be displaced, leading to disastrous impact on communities around the globe… and many after-effects are still being dealt with. As with any major event, opportunities were created as well.

Meanwhile, we have kids that have only known the world after… if you’re a parent of a teenager or a twenty-something today, I hope you’ve taken some time to talk to them about how we reacted as a country. How we felt. What we did… including what mistakes were made. There are countless hours of video available for them to watch and learn what people were saying first hand and I think it’s a worthwhile investment in time to watch some of it with them.

Last week, Brent Wheat and Trent Marsh discussed the statistical decline that the Fi****ms Industry has been in for several years. The data (NICS Checks, Sales Figures, etc… suppressors aside) shows the numbers going down pretty clearly. We’ve all seen stories about shutdowns, layoffs and consolidation at the manufacturing and retail levels.

Apparently, this episode has caused quite a stir with insiders that don’t like the way the facts feel… so much so that Brent and Roy Huntington posted a follow up episodes discussing the backlash just a couple of days ago.

Decades ago, conventional wisdom assured everyone that there was an annual cycle to the fi****ms industry sales numbers. More recently, there has been a dark truth behind panic buying and political cycle surges… sales went up when people got scared, whether the fear was crime or politics. Since 2020, neither of those factors have moved the needle much. Some State Level versions of “panic buying” have been talked about (in VA and CO most recently), but nothing like we saw in 1994, after Sandy Hook or during the 2016 election cycle. Factors like Kamala Harris, mass shootings and threats of crime/terrorism have been present since 2020, but not moved the sales needle like they would’ve in the preceding decade.

We don’t need apologists or denial… we should consider acceptance of , and maybe even a little celebration for, a calmer traditional sales cycle that could solidify our industry.

Deep cleaning, and a little touch-up blueing, on a couple of old rifles this afternoon.

I rarely do “superficial” cleaning of my guns, but these two have been neglected for quite some time. Possibly by the elders I inherited them from as well. 😂🤷🏻‍♂️

Haven’t practiced much during the off-season…. I’ve got 10 Days to tune it up.Who else is getting ready?
