Hadal Profiler
We’re going to the deepest parts of the ocean with the Hadal Profiler, a new science tool being developed by University of Hawai’i researchers.

The Hadal Profiler will dive down to the bottom of the deepest ocean trenches—measuring water chemistry, ocean currents, and sound as well as capturing video of ocean organisms as it goes, from the surface to 11,000 meters deep.

We check out the profiler and some of its instruments, head to the lab to see organisms discovered in the deep ocean trenches, and meet some of the researchers, engineers, and students who are part of the Hadal Profiler development Team.

Ahola STEAMSEAS students and e huaka’i me ka palekana!

This fantastic group of undergrads just arrived here in Hawaii to sail for their first expedition aboard the R/V Kilo Moana to Alaska. Their first stop was a tour of the ROV Lu’ukai!

STEMSEAS is a National Science Foundation funded program that provides ship based experience for undergraduates from diverse backgrounds to engage in oceanographic activities. We hope they learn a lot and find joy in ocean research!

Mahalo to University of Hawai'i Marine Center and SOEST for facilitating our biosecurity training aboard R/V Kilo Moana this past weekend. What an impressive vessel, not to mention welcoming captain and crew. We’ll post more photos in the coming weeks!

During from February to April, the OET ROV team used the University of Hawai'i Marine Center high bay and machine shop facilities to complete a significant rebuild of . The team at the UH facility are so welcoming and extraordinarily helpful accommodating all the requests of the ROV team. With access to the machine shop and the many other resources available to us, we certainly could not have accomplished our goals within the timeframes we had. A special thank you goes out to Max Cremer and Daniel Hinshaw. We are very grateful for all your help, support, flexibility and could really feel the Aloha spirit during our stay. Thanks you so much from the ROV team and all of us at OET, we appreciate you.
