Memorial Day was never about a long weekend.

It started in the years after the Civil War, when towns across America gathered at gravesites to lay flowers and read names out loud. The point was simple. Don't let anyone disappear.

That's still the work today. Say the names. Tell the stories. Make sure the children in our communities know who they're walking past in the cemetery.

The Exchange Club has spent more than a century honoring service. Today we honor the ones who paid the highest price for it.

Alma Dietz, our ACE committee chairperson presented Mr Ferdindand Clement from Phoebus High School a check for $500 and the ACE award for 2026. Accepting the Challenge of Excellence (A.C.E.) award honors students who have overcome adversity to graduate high school and move their lives in positive directions. These students are often overlooked for their accomplishments and can serve as powerful examples to all students that hard work and perseverance do pay off. Congratulations, Ferdinand!

The Exchange Club of Wythe members, Rich and Alma Dietz, President Pat Garvey, and Mark Birdsong spent a great afternoon participating in the Northampton Connection Fair! We set up a booth between 1-4pm on Saturday, April 25 and shared information about our club and the services we provide to the community. We planted a pinwheel garden in support of the prevention of child abuse and passed out American flags for GiveAKidAFlagTo Wave. We signed up approximately six people who agreed to serve as volunteers for some of our fundraisers. Alma Dietz sold plants she started and grew from scratch, and will donate those funds to the club. It was a great way to get out and share all the good work we do with community members!
