Black history is our history.
🧡 Black History is Our History - George Washington.
George Washington was not just the name of the United State’s first president, but is shared by one of Washington’s most notable Black pioneers and the founder of the City of Centralia.
In 1872, he established Centralia, overcoming significant racial barriers of the time. Despite laws restricting Black citizens from owning land, Washington’s determination and business acumen led him to create a successful community where all people could live and work together.
Washington was born in Virginia to enslaved parents. After his father was sold and taken away from their home, Washington’s mother left him with a white couple named Anna and James Cochran. When Washington grew up, frustrated by the discriminatory laws in the south and midwest, his parents and him took a wagon west. They first settled in Oregon, but then crossed the Columbia river. In 1852 the family claimed land near the Chehalis River. To bypass discriminatory land ownership laws, his parents deeded the parcel to Washington. Knowing the railroad would soon be built near his land, he started a town with his wife. Washington was an active civic leader up until his death in 1905.
