Have a musical conversation with your little one!
It’s not hard to do! Just pick up a drum, a rattle, or even a homemade shaker or box, and sing a familiar song as you tap the beat or shake the shaker. Then see how your child responds. Keep singing, and keeping a steady beat while you’re responding to your child’s reactions, creating a call and response effect. At Music Together® we know that family music time is the best, and it’s the best way to support your child’s growth into a confident music maker!

Did you know Music Together has nine unique song collections which rotate over the course of three years, and three collections that are made up of the best of the best songs pulled from those nine collections? This Summer families around the globe enjoyed songs from one of those “best of” collections--called the Harmonica Collection! This Fall we’re starting the Fiddle Collection, which is represented by the green circle located at 1:00 o’clock, just to the right of Harmonica in this graphic. How do young children learn music? Immersion!
We mentioned recently that the best thing you can do as a grown up in our classes or at home with your children is to sing and play musically! That’s because children learn through play. Our classes are full of playful exploration, allowing children to just have fun musically. We’re not intellectualizing music here, we’re experiencing it. So the children are truly immersed in music experiences that are fun, informal but full of learning opportunities for them.
Would you like to learn more about how to support your child’s musical development? Our 10-week Fall Online semester begins on September 11th and we’d love to have you with us! Back in 1986, Music Together co-founder and creator Ken Guilmartin was teaching at his daughter's school and busy developing the Music Together® program. It was during this time that he wrote a song for his daughter’s school celebration of the 40th anniversary of UNICEF (the United Nations Children's Fund). Originally this song was called "Solstice Song." The intention of the song is a simple, heartfelt wish that all children—all people everywhere—might live in peace.
After September 11, 2001, Ken rearranged and retitled the song "May All Children" in memory of the events of that day. In 2002, "May All Children" was included in the Music Together Sticks song collection. Enrolled families have been enjoying this lovely song and beautiful illustration which was included in this Summer’s Harmonica song collection! If you’d like to hear this song, and sample a few others please download the FREE Music Together Hello Everybody app, available for ios and android devices, and click on Music. There you’ll find May All Children, along with seven other Welcome Songs.
After you’ve checked out some of our music, we hope you’ll head over to our website to connect with us online at www.MusicTogether916Valley.com. We’d love to speak to you and answer any questions you have about our program or about music development in children.

Did you know that Music Together® song collections often include songs in languages other than English? Every culture has its own traditional music, sometimes called “folk music.” This traditional music has typically been passed on orally through the generations and captures an essence of national culture. In modern societies, though, some of the traditional songs are being forgotten, and researchers cite the rise of recorded music and decline in the tradition of family and community music making as two primary causes. Hotaru Koi is a traditional song from Japan, and Music Together’s rendition includes piano, violin, chimes and some wonderful children’s voices as well as some unique instruments like the tongue drum, Vietnamese tone blocks, and Tibetan finger cymbals! Music Together intentionally includes these traditional songs from around the world to do what we can to keep these cultural songs alive. As a bonus, families are exposed to music from around the world which broadens your child’s horizons, and opens their ears to unique sounds and languages. Cross cultural music making has even been shown to increase cultural understanding and connection.

In case you missed it, the other day we posted about some research done by a team of social neuroscientists at Bar Ilan University and the University of Chicago. We mentioned that among other things, music provides human beings with a sense of comfort and social connection. We’re taking a look at and sharing some of the take-aways gained from this research in a new series of posts that we’ll be releasing in the next few months to come. Look for the full article which was published in American Psychologist which includes a new map of what’s happening in the brain as it relates to the social connection and music. “Music is a fundamental part of our evolution, allowing for unique expressions of social ties. It can strengthen cohesion and mutual trust between people by signaling shared values.” - Jean Decety, Director of Child Neurosuite, University of Chicago.

Music, Daddy & Me?! Yes!!! We love when dads participate in our Music Together Online classes! You might be used to hearing about “Music, Mommy & Me” classes, but dads often come to Music Together classes and your little ones will not only love having you join them for class, but they’ll get even more out of class with more than one of their important grownups with them, sharing in the musical fun every week! The added benefit of this is that the more classes you attend with your little one, the more you’ll get the hang of our music activities, and the more familiar you’ll get with the songs and activities, so you and your little ones can recreate the musical fun between classes. The result? Your family truly becomes a more musical family, and you set your children up for a lifelong love of music!

Among many other things, music provides human beings with a sense of comfort and social connection. Within an article published on June 10, 2021, called “What Happens In The Brain When People Make Music Together” by Bar-Ilan University in a publication called American Psychologist, there’s been some new research which provides a neuroscientific understanding of this social connection, along with a new map of what is happening in the brain when an individual is playing music or singing. We’ll be sharing some of the research team’s thoughts and conclusions in a new series of posts we’ll be releasing over the next few months.

Musical conversations are the best!
Not too long ago we mentioned how when jazz musicians play together it almost sounds like they’re having a conversation. In case you missed it, we shared that musicians really do have musical conversations on their instruments when they’re playing together, but you don’t have to be a professional musician or possess any kind of special skills to get a musical conversation going with your child! In fact, you can start just by putting on some music, grabbing something to shake, or drum on, and just playing along and responding to the music you’re listening to. When your child hears and sees you enjoying music-making they’ll want to do what you’re doing too! When they do, simply respond to them in turn, creating a continuous back and forth, or call and response, then keep it going for the rest of the song! You’ll be supporting their musical growth in the best way possible--by allowing them to play and explore creatively.

Woo-woo! The song this fun illustration goes with has some history! Do you know who Sister Rosetta Tharpe is? She recorded her hit song “This Train” in the late 1930s and Music Together based one of the songs from our Harmonica Collection on that song! Tharpe was a pioneering figure in many ways. She was the first woman of color to achieve international acclaim, and one of the first women to become known for her exceptional guitar playing.
