Detroit Leadership Academy | December Network Meeting Preview

Our December 1st First 10 Network Meeting will feature a presentation by the Detroit Leadership Academy (DLA), which formed their First 10 Partnership in 2022. Since the start, DLA has been intentionally responsive to the needs of students and their families. To inform joint professional learning (JPL) opportunities for pre-K and kindergarten instruction teams, DLA solicited feedback from their Parent Advisory Committee. The First 10 team has also established a high level of transparency in its use of data to ensure that parent and community investment is meaningful. The team embedded monthly joint pre-K/K professional learning opportunities as a standard practice, and, as a result, the JPLs have become an anticipated activity in which teachers are able to coordinate and partner regularly to better support DLA students prior to, during, and after transition from pre-K into K. The team also supports children’s transition to K through a “Welcome to Kindergarten Night” (with stations for the children to visit, classroom visits, etc.) and half and full day “Welcome to K Transition Day” schedule options.

We will hear from Chanel Benton, Great Start Readiness Program’s pre-K director at Detroit Leadership Academy, and Kiada Watts, Sr. Director of Early Learning + K-8 Intervention at Champion Education Network, who will share how they build partnerships and plan their joint professional learning opportunities with intentionality and sustainability in mind. They will also share how their work informs, and is informed by, the DLA and Champion Education Network strategic plan. Join us to hear about these exciting developments (and more!) and to discuss the implications for your community.

State Superintendent Michael Rice is celebrating by reflecting on the impact of black authors. Click the link below to learn more about highlighted black authors throughout the month.

"When I was growing up, I read extensively. I found that books opened new worlds for me. I was very fortunate to have a mother who regularly took me to the library and encouraged me to 'take home as many books as you can carry,' parents who read to me, and strong teachers who inspired me to read and to explore many topics."

Black History Month is about honoring the past and imagining what the future holds for black and brown children.
CEN schools focus on culturally responsive teaching and learning so that our students can see and hear about heroes, disruptors, and revolutionaries that look like them year-round. We learn about the past so that we can change the future.
Our students are history makers. Our students are change agents. Our students are the future. Detroit Leadership Academy High School Detroit Leadership Academy PK - 8 Fostering Leadership Academy

Today we honor him, but every day we have the opportunity to honor his legacy. At CEN we do this by living our values, which include a commitment to be anti racist. We strive to identify, challenge and reform oppressive systems and biases to ensure a culturally responsive, equitable education for the students we serve.
