Happy New Year and Akemash*te Omedetou Gozaimasu!

In Japan, New Year’s is often considered the most important holiday. Homes and entrance gates are decorated with ornaments and people often spend time in their hometowns to celebrate with parents and grandparents. Certain businesses close between January 1st and January 3rd while families enjoy eating Osechi Ryori, the traditional food enjoyed during the New Year’s holiday. Similar to bento boxes, Osechi Ryori is usually stored in layers in lacquer boxes (jubako) and there are many types of food in each layer. The multi-tiered boxes symbolize the hope that wealth and happiness will come to the family in the new year.

Many Japanese people visit shrines and temples on January 1st to ring the bell and pray for success and health. It is common to buy omikuji at shrines, which are paper fortunes detailing the recipient’s luck in the coming year. Recipients of bad luck fortunes can tie their omikuji onto tree branches to ensure that any misfortunes that have been predicted can be left behind at the shrine.

Consul General Shindo wishes all of you a happy and prosperous new year!
