Texas committed $50 million to ibogaine research, then had to supply the private match itself when no drug company met state requirements. Colorado authorized up to five research sites in June, with benefit-sharing requirements for Central African communities written into the bill.

In May, Gabon classified iboga and its derivatives as national strategic heritage. Research, export, and commercialization there now require government authorization.

Ismail Ali, co-executive director of MAPS, writes that these are not separate stories. His argument is that the people whose knowledge and natural resources make a commercial product possible should have a say in how it gets developed and who benefits.
