Yes, you brought a smile to my face! Now that June 2024 is officially over, I’d like to thank those Facebook friends that supported me for my June birthday month in thoughts, prayers and donations for March of Dimes. Geri and I set a goal for my birthday to raise money for a charity. I’ve known about March of Dimes from my parents, church, elementary school and fraternity most of my 73 years. Our grandchildren know that March of Dimes pioneered the vaccine research, which led to the eradication of polio in the U.S., when I was a child.

My Facebook friends helped me surpass my goal of $1,906 we raised over $2,500!!! A special shout out to my wonderful Plymouth United Church of Christ Detroit, Sunday School in Detroit for supporting March of Dimes Team Alpha for the last 10 years.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., is still trying to raise over a half million dollars in 2024 to PROTECT THE HEALTH OF ALL MOMS AND BABIES. Your contribution, supports research, programs, education, and advocacy needed by parents throughout their pregnancies. Together we can help close the health equity gap for all families.

Our Team Alpha-March of Dimes link will not close until next month:

May God continue to bless all of you!

All of us pictured(L to R Self, Ocie Drake, Art Humphrey, James Bearden I’m the only one on Facebook) plus four more pledged Alpha Phi Alpha together the Spring & Summer of 1971 on Eta Xi-University of Detroit first line. I believe it was one of the best decisions we made in our lives. We got together Dec 27, 2015, to watch the Detroit Lions defeat the San Francisco 49ers. So we took a photo of this glorious occasion.

We never know how many days we have left on earth, so we live each day with purpose. Yesterday the president of our line Dr. Bro. Ocie Drake was called to meet his maker and join our Omega Chapter of Sweet Rest.

Until we meet again; RIP Ocie!

I don’t have any blood brothers but God blessed me by putting these bruhs (pictured below at 2023 UDM scholarship luncheon) in my life over 50 years ago. Dr. Ocie Drake(center) was the president of our pledge line for around 10 long hard weeks before he dropped off line to attend dental school. We still consider him as one of our Sands even though he crossed Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. , grad at Gamma Lambda chapter 10+ years after us. Ocie’s cousin Rudolph Markoe (middle) was one of seven founders of Eta Xi Chapter at University of Detroit. Alpha men follow God’s most important commandment “Love for all mankind.”

Art Humphrey(left) is one of my six plus one Sands. He lived in China for over 10 years but came home a few years before Covid to take care of his mother.

Art and I visited Ocie at Providence Hospital ICU today. He is having a rough time. We both remember being in Providence ICU less than three years ago thinking it was our end. God said it wasn’t our time and we still are able to praise his name. Please pray peace, health and mercy for Ocie. He has been in ICU for over three weeks.
