The Michigan Area Health Education Program (MI-AHEC) was established in 2010 by Wayne State University as a partnership between the School of Medicine and the College of Nursing and is funded by the Health Resources and Administrative Services (HRSA) as a federal grant (AHEC) established by Congress. The overall mission of AHEC is to recruit, train and retain a health professions workforce committ

ed to underserved populations. The Michigan Area Health Education Center launched its Southeast Regional Center (SERC) in 2017. SERC is hosted by Health Centers Detroit Foundation, Inc. (HCD) - a non-profit, 501(c)3, Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) Look-Alike, three-site community health center. Located in Detroit, Mich., SERC is responsible for implementing AHEC goals in 9 counties: Genesee, Lapeer, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw and Wayne. "I enjoyed Oral Health Dental Camp is because they had lectures and challenging assignments and there were actual hands-on research and education. It gave us a real sense of what it’s like to be a Dentist or to work in the dental field. We were given such an opportunity that I am still shocked I was able to experience the camp. I can’t wait to share all of the information with people I know." - Oral Health Dental Camp participant

Southeast Regional Center is proud to welcome the 2026 HCD Scholars cohort - three outstanding students who are spending eight weeks exploring healthcare careers, engaging with community partners, and participating in hands-on learning and professional development experiences that strengthen Michigan's future healthcare workforce.

This Father’s Day, we celebrate fathers, father figures, and caregivers who make a difference in the lives of their families and communities every day. 💙

It’s also a reminder that men’s health matters.

Regular checkups, preventive care, and access to healthcare services can help detect health concerns early and improve long-term well-being. Yet many men face barriers to care, especially in rural and underserved communities.
