On March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck off the northeast coast of Japan. Known as the Great Touhoku Earthquake, it is the strongest quake recorded to have hit Japan. The quake shifted Japan's main island, Honshuu, as much as 8 ft to the east, generated tsunami waves as high as 133 ft and traveled up to 6 miles inland. The tsunami triggered 3 nuclear meltdowns as waves shut down the cooling systems' electrical generators. Reports confirm over 15,800 deaths, over 6,000 injuries and nearly 2,600 missing across 20 prefectures. The quake took a massive toll on the lives and landscape of Northeast Japan. Five years have passed since the quake, but it will never be forgotten.
