Casa Richard Academy

Casa Richard Academy Casa Richard Academy was a tuition free charter high school, located in Southwest Detroit. It closed and the last graduating class was the class of 2013.

It was a family and many still stay in touch. I became the administrator and I was a teacher there Casa Richard Academy closed permanently in June, 2014. It was a tuition free charter high school that originally developed from tutorial classes at Casa Maria Community Center on Trumbull in Detroit. It soon grew to a full curriculum program and in 1994 had the distinction of becoming the first chart

er school licensed in Michigan. Students came from various schools and at different grade levels. However, their common denominator became a real interest in learning, along with a growing understanding of personal responsibility and the strong career possibilities that lie ahead of them. From 1998 until 2002, Casa Richard Academy operated out of the Latino Family Services building. We proudly resided at 2635 Howard between 18th and St. Anne for 12 years

For the original Casa kids: I received this message from Charlene Cross: I found a photo of Mrs.Cooper saying she had passed away in September of this year 😭😞 it crushed my soul knowing her and her husband are both gone.RIP to the Coopers

I'm always so sad to make these postings. An alumni has passed away--Rachael Singleton. She attended Casa in the late 90's when we were in the Latino Family Services Building. I don't know much else, but feel free to give details or post memories.

To the early Casa Maria and SER-Casa kids, a former student has passed. His name was Paul Hunt. He leaves behind a daughter and wife. They are doing a benefit to get money for the cremation, paying bills, etc. It's at a bar called Duke of Earl in River Rouge. It's from 4:00 - 8:00 pm I received the information from Joann Lilley.
