On August 26th, 1817 the Governor and judges of the Territory of Michigan established the Catholepistemiad of Michigania in Detroit. Territorial Judge Augustus B. Woodward (raised in Zion Lodge in 1808) asked Rev. John Monteith and Father Gabriel Richard to establish the school. The school would eventually become the University of Michigan and move to Ann Arbor in 1837.

Zion Lodge donated $250 (today's equivalent of over $5000) at a September 15th, 1817 meeting toward the efforts to establish the school. This painting by Robert Thom depicts that meeting.

We had a lovely day at Bookie's Bar and Grill and Comerica Park on Sunday afternoon with family and friends to watch the Detroit Tigers take on the Chicago White Sox! Despite the humidity, bouts of rain, and a Tigers loss, a good time was still had by all.

Unbeknownst to us, it was 'Stache Out The Park Day, a charity event for the Brain Injury Association of Michigan. We were in the midst of a sea of Magnum P.I. fans dressed as Tom Selleck!

On August 16th, 1812, General William Hull surrendered Fort Detroit and his 2,500 men to a British and Indian force led by Major General Issac Brock and Shawnee chief Tecumseh. The British would occupy Detroit until September 29th, 1813.

This passage from our September 7th, 1812 meeting minutes contained in Records, Bylaws, and Accounts 1794-1829, Zion Lodge No.1 F & A. M. relates to that event, it reads:

"Since the last regular communication of this Lodge, the American Flag having been lowered and that of his Brittanic Majesty's substituted, towit, on the 16th day of August last, at noon, from which and from the political situation of the country generally it appeared expedient that an early and more full Lodge shall be held. On motion of A.B. Woodward, it is ordered unanimously, that when this Lodge is closed, it be closed until Wednesday next at seven o'clock p.m., and that Brother Secretary P.T. and Brother Tyler P.T. be requested to inform every Member and Brother in the country thereof".

The Charter, furniture, and regalia of the Lodge were deposited with a Brother of the Lodge for safekeeping. Zion Lodge would not meet again until April 9th, 1816, when the Grand Lodge of New York granted a renewal of the Charter as Zion Lodge No. 62.

In what's become an annual summer tradition for Zion Lodge, we enjoyed a wonderful excursion on the Detroit River with Detroit Cycle Boat on Wednesday evening. Zion members and guests enjoyed beautiful weather, tiki-themed libations, and excellent fellowship. Thanks again to our hard-working officers for all their efforts!
