104 years ago today, ground was broken on Shuters Hill in Alexandria. It was the first step in the construction of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial, which now towers over the region as the greatest privately-raised tribute to the memory of our nation’s first president.
Today, work at the Memorial continues. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, many important projects are underway. One of those is the repair of the badly cracked pylons that frame the main concorse leading up to the Memorial. These pylons are now being reinforced with steel rods for structural integrity. Cleaned and resurfaced for the very first time, they will add greatly to the architectural grandeur of the building and its surroundings!
Be are a part of this work by joining our Seal the Envelope campaign. Your gift will go directly to the essential work taking place right now to restore the Memorial and inspire visitors with the museum’s positive message!

A photo from 1954 of the Detroit skyline looking south. The Detroit Masonic Temple can be seen in the lower right. Some considerable difference in the skyline, and an interesting juxtaposition of infill development and land uses around the Temple between then and now.

A wonderful night of Masonic instruction and fellowship was had at Zion’s first Rusty Nail Degree, a refresher degree for the grips, signs, tokens, and words from all three degrees. The Brothers of Zion welcomed traveling brethren from nearby lodges including Livonia-United No. 152, and jurisdictions as far south as the Great State of Texas and neighboring Windsor Ontario Canada.
Special thanks to the degree conferees of the evening for sharing their time, thoughtful instruction, and insights: Matthew R. Shelton, PM (Pontiac No. 21), as Worshipful Master (WM); Josh A. Daniels, PM (Zion No. 1, and BGP Dist. 29), as Senior Warden (SW); Ryan M. Clay, PM (Walled Lake No. 528, and BGP Dist. 23), as Junior Warden (JW); and Josh DeBolt, SD (Zion No. 1), as the Senior Deacon (SD).

Greetings Brothers of Zion Lodge No. 1,
On this Memorial Day, I would ask that we all pause for a moment of silence to reflect on the somber reason for the long holiday weekend: to remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the U.S. military over the past 250-years. Their valor and sacrifice is never forgotten.
In addition, I would like to congratulate our newly raised Brother, Brad Pierce, whose Master Mason Degree was conferred this past Wednesday evening. Thank you to all Zion Officers, Brothers, and Honorary Members who attended and participated in the degree. Zion had the pleasure of welcoming a few visiting Brethren to witness Zion’s ritual and Craft in action, and to enjoy Masonic fellowship throughout the evening.
Lastly, as a reminder, Zion is presenting a Rusty Nail Degree this Wednesday, May 27 at 7pm. This will be an excellent opportunity for our Master Mason Brothers in good standing who have not been to Lodge for a while to stop by and brush up on the tokens, grips, signs and passwords of all three degrees.
May we never forget the cost of freedom, nor the lives given to protect it, and the families who carry the memory of those lost loved ones every day in their hearts.
Sincerely & Fraternally,
Scott Kuzma
Worshipful Master
