Located on the Detroit River since 1915, Bayview Yacht Club is a premier sailing club on the Great Lakes, hosting the annual Bayview Mackinac Race and local sailing events including youth and adult classes. Founded in 1915 as a fishing shack on the Detroit River, Bayview Yacht Club has evolved and thrived as a premier racing club on the Great Lakes. Balancing success in both competitive sailing and world-class hospitality isn't easy, but the members and staff have met that challenge through the decades. Every July, BYC hosts the Bayview Mackinac Race, the longest, continuously run freshwater distance race in the world. In 2024, "the Mack" celebrated its 100th running with a record number of boats (350 registered) and competitors ranging in age from 11 to 90, hailing from 47 states and 15 countries. Proving sailing is a lifelong sport, our 900-plus members range in age from junior high students to 96-years-old-and-counting, sharing a love of racing, camaraderie, sportsmanship and outdoor recreation on the waters of the Great Lakes and beyond. Our members include America's Cup sailors/winners, Olympians, world and national champions, and weeknight club racers eager to introduce newcomers to the sport as well as hundreds of volunteers making racing and shoreside fun possible. From May to October, BYC sailors are competing in and organizing local sailing events ranging from our Adult-Learn-to-Sail program to the International Match Race for the Detroit Cup with dozens of local events in between. whether you're there for the racing or a meal.
