WSU Community Affairs is actively involved in working with the many diverse ethnic and cultural organizations in Detroit and throughout the metro area.

Our mission is to promote and advance, through continued relationship building in the community and the halls of government, the strategic initiatives and goals of the university, and to serve as the university's central source of contact with public policy makers, government officials and community leaders.

WSU University Relations, the Department of Political Science, the Organization of Black Alumni and the Juneteenth Planning Committee hosted “Detroit History is Black History Part II: The Young and Archer Years.” The panel discussion focused on Detroit’s Black political leadership under Mayor Coleman A. Young and Mayor Dennis W. Archer, Sr.

The panelists all were WSU alumni who worked in the Young and Archer Administrations. They shared
narratives (some known and unknown) that defined the political leadership of Detroit’s first two Black mayors and how they impact Detroit today.
