Our student-athletes delivered an outstanding performance at the 2026 Track & Field Championship Meet, bringing home individual honors, relay medals, and team championships.
Congratulations to all of our track and field athletes and coaches on an incredible season filled with dedication, perseverance, and success. The athletes' hard work and determination resulted in a championship title for the 7th/8th grade girls, a runner-up finish for the 7th/8th grade boys, and a strong showing from the 5th/6th grade girls. We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments and the way they represented our school throughout the season.

Garvey’s 6th-grade students recently completed an engaging Detroit River Project that highlighted both their creativity and understanding of local history. Their completed projects are currently on display in the school library, allowing families and community members to celebrate their hard work and learning.
As part of the project, students explored the historical significance of the Detroit River and its role in the Underground Railroad. Curriculum Lead Dr. Brandi Hughes visited the class to share insights about Detroit’s importance as a gateway to freedom for enslaved individuals seeking refuge in Canada. Students learned about Thornton and Lucie Blackburn, whose courageous escape from Kentucky to Detroit and eventual journey to Canada became an important chapter in local history.
To enhance the learning experience, project leader Baba Wilson created a graphic novel and companion coloring book that brought the Blackburns’ story to life. These interactive resources helped students connect with the historical content in meaningful ways while creating a lasting educational legacy at Garvey.
The project has been a tremendous success, inspiring students to demonstrate curiosity, critical thinking, and pride in their work. Their accomplishments reflect both academic growth and a deeper appreciation for the rich history of the Detroit River region.

A Legacy in Literacy Starts at Home Proud DPSCD alumni are changing the narrative, and Mumford High School alum Denise Lewis is leading by example.
During National Reading Month and Women’s History Month, the Detroit Public Schools Community District Foundation announced a transformational $60,000 investment by Lewis to reimagine the library at Marcus Garvey Academy, a cornerstone of African centered education on Detroit’s east side. A retired real estate attorney and lifelong reader, Lewis is pouring back into the district that shaped her future.
Her investment will modernize the library with culturally reflective books, new digital resources, updated cataloging systems, flexible seating, and an inspiring custom mural. The goal is to create a welcoming, student centered space where literacy, culture, and identity come together.
Marcus Garvey Academy has long stood as a village for Detroit families, and this revitalized library ensures students can see themselves in the stories they read while building strong academic foundations.
DPSCD Foundation leaders describe the gift as a powerful example of what happens when Detroit alumni give back with purpose, investing not only in schools but in future scientists, artists, educators, and leaders.
This woman powered, community driven project reflects Detroit pride at its best. When we invest in literacy and education, we invest in every future our students will write.
