Congratulations to the students of our 8th grade Class of 2026! As they make their way toward graduation, Monday, June 1st, will be their individual 8th grade project presentations.
Engaging with a topic of their choice, each 8th grader at DWS spends the year researching the history and details of their topic, working with a mentor to learn the skill or craft, and finally presenting their project on stage to the entire school and parents.
Presentations will be in the auditorium Monday from 9:00-10:15 and second session from 11:00-12:00 with project displays in the gym from 1 2:00-12:30. All DWS parents are welcome to attend (we ask that attendees stay for the full session to prevent disruptions).

SECOND GRADE PLAY - THIS CLASS LOVES THE STAGE
On Friday the second graders performed The King of Ireland’s Son, their first class play on the auditorium stage, and were MAGNETIC! A classic children’s novel and based on Irish folklore, this play tells the story of the wild, youngest son of the King of Ireland as he embarks on a quest to win the hand of the Enchanter’s daughter. The story weaves together multiple tales, featuring mythical creatures, magical challenges, and adventures in fantastical lands, as the prince overcomes obstacles.

Yesterday marked 18 months since we lost our dear friend and colleague, Ms. Mary Henderson. Mary was an essential and central part of the Detroit Waldorf School, and generations of students and families, faculty and staff, were uplifted daily by Ms. Mary’s unwavering presence and commitment to the well being of our students.
Every time we cross the Burns St. crosswalk, we are reminded of the tremendous love and kindness Mary shared with everyone around her. And as of today, we are able to honor her with a vibrant crosswalk mural of flowers. Mary loved flowers. A formal dedication in Mary’s honor will be performed by the City of Detroit in the upcoming weeks. All will be welcome. 🌺🌼🌸

ANOTHER SALMON RELEASE SUCCESS!
Yesterday, our students released 70 juvenile salmon into the Detroit River through a program sponsored by the Michigan DNR, . The release was a celebration of life, ecology, and an example of place based education at its best.
Thanks to this year-long program and the leadership of Mr. Trombly, our students were able to witness the Chinook salmon eggs hatch and grow in our second floor fish tank until they were big enough for release.
The Detroit River is a straight shot down Burns Street and our 8th grade and 1st grade class “buddies” walked together and gathered by the shore at Erma Henderson Park. They used temperature controlled buckets and took turns passing cups containing a single salmon so the pairs could gently release them into the Detroit River. Mr. Trombly explained to the students that some of the salmon will make it to the Great Lakes, while others will help the rivers and waterways by becoming part of the ecosystem. He also mentioned that In 3-6 years a few might swim all the way back to this very spot in the Detroit River to lay their own eggs!

The 5th grade’s performance of The Adventures of Odysseus on Friday evening marked a turning point for the class; a moment when their growing confidence and stagecraft truly came into focus. This epic tale accompanies the 5th grade’s history and social studies curriculum, which focuses on the evolution of human consciousness, guiding students from myth to formal history through the lens of ancient civilizations.
In bringing this Greek myth to life, the students helped build the sets, managed every scene change, repaired costume pieces, and kept the audience smiling and laughing with their acting and singing throughout the evening.

Last week, our 6th grade delighted their audiences with A REAL SHOW ! Performing “The Stones Cry Out” for their yearly class play, Ms. Baryo’s students showed their well rounded skills in acting, singing, dance and comedy. The class worked together as a team and handled everything, from building the set, to music, to lights, and costumes . GREAT JOB 6th GRADE!
