LeMaxie Glover (1916–1984) was nearly 40 years old when he enrolled at Cranbrook Academy of Art to study sculpture in 1955. He had attended the University of Toledo on the GI Bill majoring in art education at age 34. His specialty was sculpture, in particular, busts produced in a range of materials. His work caught the attention of a local collector, Margaret McKelvey, who offered to pay his living expenses if he attended Cranbrook.
He accepted and completed his MFA in Sculpture in one year and upon graduation was offered a position at the Academy teaching design and woodworking, becoming its first Black faculty member in 1956. His tenure would be short-lived, however. One year later he was offered and declined two university teaching positions and chose instead to return to Toledo to teach art at Woodward High School.
Citing the struggle for his own education, Glover believed that artists, like doctors, had a duty to provide their services when and where they are most needed. He continued his sculpture practice while teaching high school art in Toledo for the next 24 years, retiring in 1981. His works have been widely exhibited and collected in the Toledo area.
📙 LeMaxie Glover is one of 200 former students and faculty of Cranbrook Academy of Art featured in the landmark 624-page publication, 'With Eyes Opened: Cranbrook Academy of Art Since 1932', available exclusively from Cranbrook Art Museum. 📙
