The Michigan Black Student Project Taskforce has TWO proposal opportunities to better understand the needs of educators of color across Michigan. Please see the following RFPs for a research study being conducted to investigate teacher recruitment and retention for Black and Brown teachers in Michigan.

One is for a research contractor and the other is for community organizations. We are so excited to see your applications! If you have questions, please email Dr. Chloe Kannan at [email protected] by the 6/19 question deadline.

Studies have shown that voucher programs benefit the wealthy, not working families. In states that have vouchers, the majority of students who use them already attended private schools before receiving them. Rather than creating opportunity or “choice”, these programs subsidize tuition for families who can already afford private schools.

Michigan's Constitution prohibits public funds for private schools. That's for a reason! Michiganders rejected vouchers in 1978 and 2000. Our communities have made it clear: we believe that public dollars belong in public schools. Trump and Devos' current voucher scheme puts all of this at risk.

Tell Governor Whitmer to reject this federal voucher scheme and protect accessible education: https://actionnetwork.org/events/opt-out-michigan-no-vouchers-public-information-session/

Michigan schools need a budget passed by June 30 that:
⚡️ Helps at-risk students get the resources they need
⚡️ Adopts the MI Blueprint for special education
⚡️ Rejects the House proposal that would cut billions from the School Aid Fund

We cannot let legislators continue to play political games with our kids. Take action to demand that they fund public schools fully and equitably!

Join us in celebrating our Youth Collective Co-Chair, Janiala! She has consistently shown up for young people and pushed our work forward with so much care and intention. Janiala is the kind of leader who makes people feel heard and welcomed while still challenging us to think bigger about justice, education, and youth power. She is a leader who has built community while building a bright future.

Not only is Janiala graduating from Renaissance High School as Class President with a 4.2 GPA, but she has received over 70 college acceptances and has been offered millions in scholarships! Now, she is heading to Howard University to study law. We have been so incredibly lucky to have her in our collective 🤲🏾💛

“Janiala has been such an important part of the Youth Collective. Watching her grow as a leader while continuing to pour into other young people has been really inspiring. She’s leaving behind a real impact on this community, and I know she’s going to continue doing amazing things wherever she goes next.” - Imani Clark, Youth Organizing Lead.

Mental Health Care for Our Kids 05/27/2026

Last year, Congress cut almost $1 billion from school-based mental health programs. Now, they're trying to cut even more. This administration is aiming to eliminate roughly $2 billion from children’s behavioral health systems, which means that there will be even fewer counselors, psychologists, and social workers in high-need schools.

Our kids are in a time of deep crisis. LGBTQ+ students are facing protection rollbacks. Students of color are being harmed by attacks on equity and culturally responsive support. Immigrant students are carrying the trauma of raids, family separation, and detention threats.

Tell Congress to stop cutting mental health care for our youth: https://actionnetwork.org/letters/mental-health-care-for-our-kids/
